Porter: 7,820,000

Dangit! lol

Just like Porter, I'll be glad to provide a Dragon event account and I promise I'll do it quite calmly. I wrote and am maintaining the website for our event (since Porter doesn't have the time for such things.)

I've known Porter for quite a while now; meeting him through the NASIOC (then i-club) Subaru board. I can tell you from experience that his reaction in the now-closed thread was due to the complete barrage of outright or thinly-veiled hatred that he keeps receiving before and after each event by folks who do not attend.

Here are some little-known facts about our meet:

1) On Thursday night, we drank beer and sat around the cabins telling stories. Cars were parked and we ignored them.
2) On Friday a group of us went whitewater rafting on the Nantahala; we even got our own special Subaru parking area and a picture. We're hoping the picture will make it to the next "Drive" magazine. Most of the time, cars were parked and ignored.
3) Friday night, we had a small bonfire. More beer was consumed and people sat around and fellowshipped with each other; lots of folks don't see each other but once or twice a year.
4) Saturday folks went driving on some nearly forgotten gravel roads. One big group went for a scenic drive along the Cherohala Skyway, led by Porter. There were no problems.
5) We all met in Tellico Plains for lunch at a place called "Bistro by the River" where we had the entire downstairs outdoor area reserved for us. The restaurant was appropriately named and yes, we were right by the river. Other folks drove different ways; we all met for lunch. We hear of Chris's unfortunate incident and folks leave their lunch to go make sure he's ok. He joins us a bit later.
6) Saturday afternoon we bought 4 grills and then donated them to Fontana village as a token of our appreciation...after we cooked food on them of course. Some folks randomly drove around here and there. We get word that a Blue WRX crashed into a Silver STi. Nobody really seemed to know who they were; no-one had seen a Silver STi the whole time.
7) Saturday night we had a big bonfire and talked to the folks from the SV riders group who were happy to be sharing with us; we shared food, drink, and stories of high horsepower. Much beer was had as was a good time by all.
8) Sunday there was more driving on gravel roads and then folks went home happy and content, their digital cameras and heads filled with memories.
9) The misconceptions and attacks start on the boards by folks who did not go. Folks who did go can't figure out where the hatred is suddenly coming from.

Footnotes:
a) The girls in the Miata were ok; not airlifted out. I saw them (kinda cute actually) hanging around Fontana village with about 4-5 other Miata folks before Saturday. As far as I know, they never talked with the Subaru folks as they kept to themselves.
b) There were Subaru drivers that were reprimanded throughout the event. One was the blue WRX driver. His unfortunate plan to mate his WRX with an STi and create a cute little fuzzy Justy baby didn't work. Still haven't figured out who that was...
c) Porter deserves a lot of credit for organizing such a meet like this; it takes a lot of time and work.
d) There were no accidents in group driving, despite all of the antagonists on the boards pre-conceived notions about how dangerous group driving can be. Said antagonists continue to rant...but that took away their ammo so now they're even more mad. lol

Kudos if you read all of this! I warmly encourage all folks to feel free to come to our meets at the Dragon to enjoy some beautiful scenery and great company. I've been every year in a different vehicle and it just makes no difference at all. Driving is quite honestly very secondary and the folks who do go to the meets end up talking about what fun they had not because of the driving they did, but because of the people in attendance. Driving can be done anywhere; it's the people you get to hang out with and the cool cars you get to see parked next to you back at your cabin that make it an experience rather than just a twisty road.

edit: I forgot that on Saturday afternoon, we had a large photo op on the baseball field of all of the Subarus involved right before we did our cookout. Here is a photo for proof:
