300zx
Does anybody here know anything about the early 300ZX? I saw an '85 (red, five-speed with t-tops) for sale. I called the owner, and I'm going to try to look at it tonight. From my quick walk-around, the car had zero rust. Really nice condition, I though. 97k miles.
I'm considering getting rid of the Justy for it, but I don't know a thing about these cars.

My buddy had one of these. 86 I think his was. He had problems with a fuel temp sensor (which caused horrible stuttering and baffled several local mechanics), TPS, the digital dash fuel gauge stopped working (as did the RPM'S), and the climate control didn't work. It was, though a nice car. 6 cylinder engine made about 180HP if I remember correctly. T-tops were great in summer (although they leaked water) Leather seats were very comfortable. It was quick and fun to drive, but plagued by problems due to neglect by previous owner. Eventually it became a shiny lawn ornament.
The car talked too! It would tell you when you were low on fuel (and since the fuel gauge didn't work it was ALWAYS saying that!), and it would tell you when your doors were open. Dave Last edited by red95svx; 05-27-2004 at 12:33 PM. |

My first car was a '90 300ZX TT w/ t-tops. I didn't have much exposure to the earlier models, but I did talk to a few owners at meets.
General things to look for on all 300ZX's are: 1) The t-tops are known to leak with age. Remove both and check the condition of the paint in the 'frame' that holds them in place. If you see any rust, then the t-tops have been leaky for some time. 2) If it is a turbo model, then expect to replace the turbo(s) at 120-140K miles. If not a turbo model, the NA Z's have been known to have engines that are generally maintenance free and can last well over 200K miles. 3) Z's also had undersized rotors, and warpage is common on all years (Z31 & Z32) 4) Make sure they're no open recalls. I think there was some kind of power steering recall as they leaked fluid... Good luck! -Chike

Nice car. Too many silly gadgets that break easily. If you can find one with all the electronics in order, they are very cool cars. I looked at one that was a POS and it kept saying 'the door is ajar' over and over again.

My dad had a turbo 200 when I was in middle schoo. It talked, too, but I remember the voice being really muffled.
I didn't think to ask the owner whether or not this one talked. It is not a turbo, it's a two-seater and it has the t-tops. I don't know if they leak, but thanks for the suggestion - I'll lift both to look underneath. Fuel temp sensor, huh?

Yep. He wasted a lot of money trying to fix that problem. Went to three or four local garages "because dealers are expensive" and nobody had a clue......one guy sold him a complete tune up for several hundred dollars, one suggested a fuel pump, someone else suggested a new computer....etc. I told him to take it to a Nissan dealer and have them scan for codes (the CE light was on). It might cost you $40-$50, but at least you'll know what the hell is wrong!!!! He FINALLY went, and it turned out to be relatively inexpensive to fix. Dave |

Well, the Z I drove this evening is in gorgeous shape. The guy bought it new, and he's clearly taken care of it. Nearly everything works. And it talks, apparently, but I didn't do anything that might make it do so.
If I ran 2nd up above 4000RPM, 3rd would engage with a crunch. I don't know if that's a clutch adjustment that it needs or if the synchros (if it has any) are bad. I'm really, really tempted. We'll see...

i have a '88 300ZX, they are great cars but beware, their electronics are only good for about 10 to 12 years; that's the main problem because you'll have engine problems because of these electro sensors going bad, also check under the carpet, in the trunk area for rust. i've had no problems with t-top leaks.
mine is currently damage (minor accident) so it's not on the road but will be soon.

Thanks, but I looked at the car in May and decided not to buy it. It was a stupid decision.
But I did just buy an '86 MR2.

we have a 93 pearlie in our lot with 90k miles. T top. Nice car. I STILL like my svx better. But I've taken the 300z for a ride once in a while for lunch or running around town etc.

Lwin, the 300ZX I drove was an '85. In my opinion it was a more focused sports car and a real sweetheart.
Did I like it more than my SVX? I wouldn't comparing the two because, as I said, it had a different focus.

I do give those cars credit. They are fun cars but are definately different animal compare to SVXes. I like them as cars. They are nice to look at and attract a ton of people.

how do you like it?? I was considering buying a 91 MR2, but the older ones aren't nearly as expensive. How are the older ones??
