Dashboard & Heater hoses

Has anyone had the experience of the inside of the car being flooded with steam and coolant from under the dashboard? Not an experience I would like to repeat. Diagnosis was either the heater hose broken or heater core gone. Decided on the quick fix to isolate the heater as mechanic told me that taking the dash out and locating the fault is going to be very expensive. How difficult is it to get the dashboard out and get at the heater hoses and core?

Re: Dashboard & Heater hoses

This site lists the steps (scroll past the other Subaru models to get to SVX).
Probably not good enough to follow without some photos, but it will give you a quick idea as to how difficult it might be.

The factory service manual would be a good place to start.

Re: Dashboard & Heater hoses

Well after isolating the heater core and deciding to be without a heater, on the way home the Antilock Barke light was on but brakes were all OK. Not for long - some 15 minutes into the trip my brakes failed completely - pedal rock hard and no brakes!!!
It appears that the coolant when leaked out under the dashboard, was not cleaned up properly and drowned the Brake control unit!!!!
Not having much luck with my SVX lately!!!

Note to self : if I ever build or design a car from scratch, don't put sensitive electronics on the floor !
