Oil Analysis?

Has anyone ever had their oil analyzed? I just had my first oil change on my '96 and was thinking of having Blackstone Laboratories check out a sample.

Re: Oil Analysis?

never done it with any of my vehicles before, but then again i usually do fairly regular oil changes with my cars.

I am looking to do it with my Diesel Truck next oil change though, but that's only because i plan on running that oil (10qts of Rotella T6 Synthetic) for 8,000-10,000 miles so i just want to make sure it can stand up to it.

Re: Oil Analysis?

Hi everyone, Its my understanding that this is done on big diesel trucks as they use gallons of oil. Not quarts of oil. They then ad the additives that were used up and the oil is good to go. Take care, BOBB

Re: Oil Analysis?

I've had this analysis performed and was pleased with their down to earth "recommendations" after the numbers were read out. I'll use those numbers as baseline numbers going forward. As I recall the charge was around $20.

Re: Oil Analysis?

The cost is $25 or $35 if you want to know how much active additive is left in the oil.

Rojorocket, did you have the analysis done on an SVX? If so, would you mind sharing the results?

For those planning to keep their slush-boxes, Blackstone Labs will also analyze your ATF.

Re: Oil Analysis?

Sure can. There is a Comments section stating, in this case, specific to my '97 SVX after missing an oil change interval, going 10,100 miles on M1 10W30 oil.
"Universal averages show typical wear levels for this type of engine after about 4500 miles on the oil. This oil was run a lot longer at 10,100 mi, so that's part of the reason that wear is higher than average. We're afraid you might have passed the tipping point on optimal oil changes though, because Iron normally moves up and down with miles, the other metals should not. Lead and nickel may show extra wear at the bearings and a steel part. If the extra metal doesn't bother you, stick with 10K. If it does, try 7K mi. No coolant/fuel found."

Then a table including the following elements were compared to a "universal" average measurement in ppm, in a tracking format, to allow the next test results to be inserted alongside these.

Element Actual- Universal Ave.
Aluminum 4- 3
Chromium 1- 1
Iron 20- 6
Copper 11- 12
Lead 8- 2
Tin 6- 0
Molybdenum 95- 66
Nickel 5- 0
Manganese 1- 0
Silver 0- 0
Titanium 0- 0
Potassium 3- 1
Boron 48- 39
Silicon 9- 10
Sodium 14- 4
Calcium 2444- 2388
Magnesium 22- 101
Phosphorous 728- 784
Zinc 976- 939
Barium 0- 0

Properties: Actual- *values should be*
SUS Viscosity @210F 59.4- 58-68
cSt Viscosity @100C 10.04- 9.7-12.7
Flashpoint in F 420- >365
Fuel % <0.05- <2.0
Antifreeze% 0.0- 0.0
Water% 0.0- 0.0
Insolubles% 0.3- <0.6

Hope that helps.

Glenn
