Unhappy Mysterious Clanking Sound

I just purchased a 1992 SVX and the car runs great. However, whenever i drive over a dip or a bump the car makes this strange clanking/jingling sound that appears to be originating from the right side of the car. The noise sounds like a chain rattling or something of that nature. If anybody has any idea of what could be causing the sound it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mysterious Clanking Sound

Check your sway bar end links. When I bought my black one it made the same sound and it was the right front end link completely disconnected that was making the noise.
Try holding your foot lightly on the brake while it's doing it, if it stops, it's worn pins and sliders on your brake calipers.

Re: Mysterious Clanking Sound

How "solid" is the sound. If it's a very light rattling/clanking, it could even be heat shields that have started to rust away.

Re: Mysterious Clanking Sound

Checked the sway bars and the heat shields. All are good. It seems to be coming from the top of the strut; the gold-colored thing at the top of the shock... If you hit it with the dust shield, it seems to make the noise... Anything up there that could make this noise?

Re: Mysterious Clanking Sound

did you have check the bearing in the center of the main axle ? ( carrier bearing? )
i have some strange sound to, and i have find this bearing doing it.
plus, the main axle move and lightly touch the heatshield below of it.
so that make somes "clanks" and "tching-tching" sounds!

Re: Mysterious Clanking Sound

I have almost the exact problem. I am going to take the front wheels off and take a good look. The noises I am hearing are coming from my left front calliper and and shock tower.

The worn pins and sliders Blacky mentioned sounds like it could be a major cause as when I depress the brakes, the sound settles down. Thanks!

I too have been having this problem recently. I had Subaru look at it and they were unable to determine the source of the noise with the car in the air, so it must be a worn moving part.

Re: Mysterious Clanking Sound

I'm getting a pretty solid clicking on hard left turns under power that I can feel through the gas pedal. Replaced both halfshafts. They were shot anyway.
Still there.
Waiting on the ball joints to show up and those are next.

But I checked my caliper and it also will wobble around like you mentioned. I'll have to take the same turn with the left foot on the brake and see what happens.

FYI:I got a clicking noise from the front when on washboard surfaces. No amount of "bouncing" the car statically could reproduce.Ended up replacing front strut upper mounts/bearing assembly. Fixed. I have done this now on two different '92. YMMV
