Fuel Economy

Hey All,

I recently replaced my coolant temp sensor. This has lead to an improvement in acceleration and performance, and most of all a slight improvement in fuel economy.

I have tested my fuel economy over many weeks, I do roughly 16Litres/100kms, I'm not sure what that coverts to in gallons per miles.

I know the car (new) gets 12Litres/100kms but I know I won't get close to this.

Is there any other components of the car that I should check and replace, or anything I could do to improve the fuel economy?

100 kms=328084', or 62.13712121212 miles.
16 litres = 4.2268 US gallons.
That gives you 14.7 MPG.
Use premium fuel.
Make sure that your brakes are not dragging.
Inflate your tires to the level on the door jam sticker.
Check or change your air filter.
Have your O2 sensors checked.
Wash and wax your SVX.
Check or change your spark plugs.
Check with ECUTune to see if he has a Stage1, VA "chip"for your car.

Did you ever replace your O2 sensor #2?.
Did you ever disconnect your battery for 30 minutes?
What do your 17" wheels and tires weigh each?
What tire size are you running?

The single most important engine sensor relating to fuel economy is the Oxygen (O2) sensor.

The SVX has two of them - one for each bank of 3 cylinders. These sensors usually last for around 100,000km. I would highly recommend that they both be changed.

You do not need to purchase the genuine Subaru part - I can confirm that NGK (NTK) part number OZA446-E55 works perfectly. It even has the correct plug that will connect directly to the factory wiring harness.

I track the fuel economy on both of my SVXs - both consume around 13.5 litres per 100 kilometers for city driving, and around 8.5 litres per 100 kilometers for highway driving.

You may also experience a slight benefit in fuel economy by replacing both of the engine knock sensors - but this would mainly benefit performance.

I have done a 60 minute battery reset.
I had the following error codes before the reset:
12- Starter switch
21- Coolant temp sensor
37- Oxygen sensor No.2

So obviously I need to get this oxygen sensor replaced, since ur in Australia too, what ls the cost roughly and where can I get it from and am I able to replace it myself like the coolant temp sensor?

P.S. My front tyres are 235/45ZR17 and my back ones are 225/45R17. I got the back ones changed coz they were scraping, and now I realize that I may have sagging suspension (stock suspension). I put 32psi in the back and 34psi in the front.

By having missmatched tires you might be destroying your transmission!
The front tires are taller, and have a circumference of more than an inch more than the rears.
On an American SVX that would have killed our clutch pack.

Are an oxygen sensor and a lambda sensor the same thing? do you have a quote on the price of the oxygen sensor OZA446-E55 NTK?

Yes - an oxygen sensor is the same as a lambda sensor.

I am not sure of the exact price, but I think it was between $150 and $200.

I ordered the sensors through Auto One - as Repco told me that they no longer order in NGK parts!

I do, but if it were an NGK thats still double to tripple the price.

Was price of $150 - $200 for both sensors? I got a quote from:

- Auto One was $100 each
- SuperCheap Auto was $119 each
- and various online stores are roughly $80 each excluding delivery

Also the price of the bosch #13250 was USD$65 on amazon.com but i dunno whether I'm better off just staying with NGK and ordering from Australia.

Haha yer definantly I could neva get around to changing the picture til the other day lol.

The Subaru genuine part for the oxygen sensor is $650 each, unbelievable!

It's not offered on the website but I make them on request. I also have the performance TCU chip for that car but I don't have the TCU so I only offer the bare chip and it's up to the user to get the desolering/soldering done (TV repair shops are a good place to get the work done).
