Re: stage oem or stage 2 clutch?

I've never even driven a manual car before but I would only use a stage 2 if I were doing a conversion

This what I have, too. I would not say it is horrible, but you do get what you pay for. Slight slippage, slight stickage. I was paying attention yesterday and I do get that jerkiness in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
I wouldn't recommend it, but for someone on a budget I would not not recommend it.

Please don't listen to the 5spd svxers here :P... but seriously spec is a great clutch in my opinion. I went through the same thing when determining which clutch to get with my swap. I asked around and found the census was SPEC stage 2. Sure its pricey but its worth it.

Re: stage oem or stage 2 clutch?

I don't know which tranny you have or what mods the car recieving the swap has, but I can say that if the KSB04 oem replacement from exedy fits (newer non-wrx) it is all the clutch a stock svx needs. Mine has been driven daily for over a year now and is still holding strong, just gave a a thorough "testing" a few hours ago

Re: stage oem or stage 2 clutch?

I've got about 3 years and 20k on my trans and clutch (including me learning how to drive stick on it). It has held up with no problem

Coming back to this thread to say that I now assertively do not endorse this clutch. It has begun rattling and chattering at low RPMs like some kind of wind-up joke teeth.

Still drives fine, though.

Actually while trying to make the chattering stop I found out that the car is capable of moving from a stop in 3rd and 4th gears (my idle was a bit high).

edit:
5th gear, too.

Re: stage oem or stage 2 clutch?

This is on my Mazda, but I have a SPEC stage 2+ and I really like it. It's a full face, so it doesn't chatter like a 6-puck, and its very driveable everyday. It is rated at 400 lb./ft. of torque, and I'm maybe running 340 lb./ft through it. Works very nicely for me.

What some old hot rodders (as well as other new folks) did was to use an OEM pressure plate, and an aftermarket disc. This would give smoothe engagement but a higher torque holding than the stock unit because of the better friction disc of the aftermarket unit.

Some of the probe guys are doing this too because the probe trannies are notoriously weak. Less shock loading means less stripped gears.
