HVLA swap?

Hello all,

I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the HVLA's with the engine still in the car. The space looks pretty tight between the frame rails, but I did see an article here about replacing the valve cover gaskets. Just don't want to open a 'big can of worms' by attempting it, then finding out there's something I didn't account for.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

-Kevin

Re: HVLA swap?

Hi Kevin
Are the HVLs ticking loud just recently? I will assume thats why you want to replace them?
But I will suggest change the engine oil or trying to clean the engine with MMO or AutoRx first. Or if its time to replace the timing belt, you might want to check the screws behind the oil pump.
BTW, how is the Nissan MAF I sold you a while ago holding up in the car?

Re: HVLA swap?

Thanks for pointing out the "how-to's"! I'm gonna give a try.
Hey Denny, I see you have a different location listed on your post. When did you move? I tried ALL of the engine cleaners, valve tapping eliminators, snake oils, magic incantations....nothing got the lifter to stop tapping. The engine I got from you is still being rebuilt (that's what I get for telling the shop to "take their time, no big rush"). I got the HVLA's back from Mizpah, and thought the hell with it, I'll see if I can swap them out with the engine in the car.....hence this post for tips. The MAF was working just fine the last time I drove the SVX, thanks again for the deal you gave me on it.

Re: HVLA swap?

Hi Kevin
Glad the MAF is still holding up, the one I had on the car crap out on me not long ago. I dont think the original MAF lasts very long.
You can def swap the HVL with engine in, but its going to be a pain.
Good luck.
Check your PM
