How do I get the rubber cam plugs out???

I'm trying to get the upper cam plugs out. Do they screw out or pry out?

What kind of seal is behind it?

Thanks Jeff

just pry them out if you have a new one, look at it!
has a lip on it just pry the lip out and out it comes.

(almost a wonder that they stay in)

There you go...

I think mine might be leaking. Can I just pop them out and put a thin coat of RTV on it and pop them back in?

After enough age the cam plugs lose their ability to seal the end of the cam. Put in new plugs, $12+ at Subaruparts.com + s&h.

I am about to change mine (hurry up DHL!!!) the drivers side is leaking, the passenger side is dry, changing it anyway. Changed the crank/oil pump seal today, that seal was a job to get out.

Is the oil pump O ring the one at the lower passenger side of the oil passages?
It's about the dia. of a quarter.

The oil pump oring is the only oring when you take off the oil pump. All of the ones I have seen are blue. It is on the lower left.

I wanted to get mine back together tonight, so i'll try the rtv.

Yeah, I've done that without any problems.

That was me responding on Subbyru's computer...

I probably had them in place for about a year with no problems for about a year before I had to pull the engine apart for a head gasket job. When I did the HG's I used new plugs.

Here's a "heads up" for you, the passenger side is the "right" side, "left" is driver side. I know when you look at the front of the engine that O ring is on the left, but that's the right side. This is how the SM describe the sides, so if you're standing in front of the engine the left is on the right

Sort of reminds you of the old country song... "I'm my own Grandpa"

Anything on a car referred to as right or left should be describing the position as it relates to you sitting in the drivers seat.

That's why it seems backwards when you're looking at it from the front of the car.

How did you remove the cam plugs without damaging them? I drilled a hole near the center of the plugs and would describe the removal as not an easy task. How did you remove them without damaging them?

My plugs had grey RTV on them. Is this a normal Subaru procedure?

If I had to take the cam plugs out, I would always put new ones in

Good luck with your project
