What is OEM Lugnut weight? Anyone use racing / light lugs?

I love spending money on things.

I figured since my winter wheels got stolen I should get locking lugs. I also figures hey since I'm doing that, I'll +1 it by getting lighter ones. If I can get some that are at least half of stock, I'll be happy. I've got my eye on a set that are 0.7 ounces, I hear your average nut is 2.0 or so.

Thoughts?

I realize any performance gain will be very negligible, but I put a lot of faith in cumulative thingy stuff.

Somebody with access to a little scale or the knowledge, hook it up.

Re: What is OEM Lugnut weight? Anyone use racing / light lugs?

Are you talking about the open end Al lug nuts? I know Porsche used them for a while and I saw allot of them fail.

Sounds like a bad idea to me. I like to have all 4 wheels on my car when I drive it.

Ten stock SVX nuts weigh 1 pound, 10.4 ounces.

Or 750 grams.

Sweet deal. I guess it wouldn't be much of a savings, course I'm using my OZ nuts on my OZ wheels. I dunno how much they weigh. I was interested in these because they are gold anodized, my OZ lugs are not.

No I don't catch your drift. I need to buy locking lug nuts so my wheels with only 200 miles on them do not get stolen like my stockers did.

My wheels are gold, the lugs that came with them are not.

Why not kill two birds with one stone by getting gold anodized locking lugs that happen to be lightweight?
I'm not going to spend 100-200 on the ****. They are like $30.

I don't see the harm, as long as you use a torque wrench to put them on and don't do it frequently. Weight off the wheels makes a much bigger difference than weight off the chassis. Another plus is that you lessen the chances of stripping your studs.

why not just get regular lugs with a wheel lock kit? some one seriously blocked your car and stole you stock wheels.. in Alaska???

Re: What is OEM Lugnut weight? Anyone use racing / light lugs?

I bought some black lightweight lugs off ebay for around $30 shipped. They're so light they almost feel like plastic. I haven't put them on yet due to the fact that my car has been in the body shop for over a month.
I am a little nervous about using them, it doesn't seem like it would take much to completely strip the threads on these while trying to get to ~80lb of torque. They are very light indeed, hopefully they hold up.

Cumulative effect, and the price is right.
The wheels were not on my car at the time but I'm done taking chances. I've seen way too much vandalism these pest few years.

What are they made of, aluminum? The ones I'm looking at are forged steel.

How much would 20 of them weigh?

OT only uses 2.5 lugnuts per wheel

We had to get aluminum lugs for the racer. The 10" wheels we got require nuts with a 45* bevel. The only ones available with the proper threads were aluminum. The wheel supplier said that we shouldn't have any problems. We've probably had them on and off 20 times or so and I haven't noticed any damage to the threads yet.

That's good to know, will make me feel a little more at ease when I decide to use them. I do have the aluminum open-end lugs.

Hocrest, do you tighten them to the factory lug torque? Would a drop of blue locktite be a bad idea?
