First if your crankshaft sprocket has issues, its better just to remove it.
It should just pull off. Or gently be pried off.
No. The oil pan only needs to be removed to replace the oil pan gasket, fix a leak, etc..
The oil seal/front main seal and O-ring can be replaced after you remove the oil pump.
Make sure that you tighten the screws on the back of the oil pump.
Tom,

I have the oil pump off, I've changed the crank/oil pump seal. Do I need to look inside the area where the plate with 5 phillips screws is? Is the oil pump O ring the quarter size O ring at the lower passenger side oil passage? So far this is so easy. My luck is "I should have broken something by now". Only thing broken is timing cover plastic, NBG

My crank sprocket came off like a loving puppy, what a shock! I had forgotten all the mystery bolts on the water pump, bent one bolt, ugh.

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

Those Phillips screws have a problem of loosening up. Out of the three timing belts I have done, two of them had screws that almost were completely off. I take them out clean them and put them back in with a little loctite to be safe.

Make sure you let the Gray sealer dry completely before you start the engine.
Overnight is good.

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

Engine is back together, started right up. The new brake pads are good, I can stop. The additional tranny cooler is really helping, I went on a 13 mile test drive, ambient is 92°f, temp went to 165° before lockup, after lockup, 145°

Now for the bad news: oil is dripping from the timing cover. It's in the area of the oil pump, must not have applied the RTV properly. I torqued the oil pump bolts to 5 ft lbs, I used a cheap wrench from China, next go around I will use the simple one made here.

I think I saw a drop of oil at the rear of the oil pan, must be the rear seal.
I am due for an ATF exchange, thinking of going to the top tranny shop here and have them pull the tranny and do the rear seal. Does the SVX have a plate on the rear of the engine that covers an oil passage? If so, will RTV reseal that cover?

I have worked so hard on these repairs, to see the oil leak is very disheartening, however, I'm becoming very expert at R&R the front of the engine.

Anyone have experience with the T209 Gates timing belt? The marks on the belt for the cam sprockets lined up perfect, the mark for the crank sprocket was not exactly on top of the sprocket arrow, the belt mark was to the side of the arrow. The engine ran fine at speed, 65, at idle in gear it tended to lope, I hope this is due to sitting for 3 weeks.

If there is air in the ATF lines how long till it's removed by fluid?

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

Man, you sure are making a lot of progress!

Is possible the timing belt is on backwards but that is irrelevant! there are the same number of notches on the sides of the center mark. The center mark is just a smidgen off the center of the grove so if belt is on backwards that would compute. You are fine.

The air in transmission lines was virtually gone at startup!

Take a look back in the area of the oil pump and cam shafts for leaks and make sure the timing belt is virtually free of oil. Not a good mixture... oil and timing belt

Good Job!!

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

Keith,

Thanks for the positive comments, they lower my depression level

Next I'm going to a detail shop and have everything under the car steam cleaned. I am so beyond black gunk on my hands, arms and head.

The valve covers show no signs of leaks

Dave
