Why?

Why?
I do but I don't have an SVX yet so that probably doesn't count!

Just down in Australia?

I do, but I'm in the states, and I'll never get to do it with me moving now. I wont have the money, nor facilities, plus finding any Subaru trannies down south (moving to Florida) to swap it with would be impossible.

As I discussed with Desertrunner last night, I'm in providing the Finance Department don't veto this one.

Long term I'm a maybe - but my preference is to go for a RSK tiptronic gearbox, a bit more involved but more of a 21st century upgrade and in tune with the style of the SVX, but of course a gearbox is useless with No Wheels!!

Hi Tony,

I would like to convert to a 6 speed in the long run. But my tranny is ok at the moment, so it is delegated to the long term wish list for now!

A Tiptronic style box sounds interesting. Or even a fancy new 5 or 6 speed auto that some new cars are sporting now...

The possibilities are quite exciting!

Mike

I've looked at the tiptronic box for a long time. I'm not sure how well it would go, you'd have to change the steering column or at least the steering wheel.

Not sure how the box talks to the ECU, or how the whole thing operates. There probably isn't any show-stoppers there, but it won't be easy street to get it working as intended. Dad and I have discussed it on many occasions but still haven't come to an agreement; I'd like to have a go on the Charcoal, but he doesn't have the immediate cash and although it would be a great improvement for an everyday driver, it would be too much fluffing around we think.

Don't let me discourage you though! Best 'box to get would be a my02 B4 Liberty (Legacy for any yanks reading this) twin turbo box tiptronic; I believe the manual boxes they used in those vehicles were the same box as the 5-speeds people use in SVX conversions. Ergo, the auto and tiptronic boxes should easily fit (if logic was invited to this party, anyway). It's not a paddle shift - only push buttons on the front side of the steering wheel but I wouldn't mind!

There is an article in the Info Warehouse on how to fit a steering wheel from that era into the SVX, so that's half the battle. The rest is all about trying to get the bits talking to each other. Kind of like the SeaSprite saga. Only I hope we actually get to the light at the end of the tunnel instead of putting a bullet in it.
