This is a very common problem even if it a factory CD. It is usually worse if they are done on a home unit or computer.

Yea. I tried a factory CD and it still does the same thing. I am waiting to see if SVXdoc has any input for me. He is supposed to be the "Radio Guru" on this network

All 3 of my SVXi dont play CD's. I can get one of them to play a factory CD, but its very selective on what it will play.
Maybe it just doesnt like my brand of music

I say pull it out and toss it.
Thats what I'm in the process of doing. I'll have some pics up in a few days of the install.

Remember that these CD players are 15 years old and have come a long way in the last few years.

Mine plays factory CDs fine but will only play burnt discs after a "warm up" period. Initially the music is real fuzzy sounding with alot of static and like to skip from track to track but then after about 10 minutes of driving it starts playing normally (work is only 12 minutes away). Its most notable on a cold or a damp morning. Ive learned to live with it.

It might be worth trying a CD laser lens cleaner disc, but the likelihood of that fixing the problem is not certain. A spray of "canned air" might be worth a shot too.

If you're already leaning towards replacing the radio, you may be better off spending that money on the new one.

Take it out and put in a new one, I stuffed around for years swaped units from another SVX etc but in the end gave up. Its got something to do with the earth. Took about 2 hours to swap. Should have done it years ago.

Anybody have any "how-to's" on how to replace it and what brand would fit in nice that looks like OEM? I would like to keep it as stock as possible.

Look at the link in my signature. There's also a link in the "How-To Documents" area.

Transplanting a radio from a newer Subaru is popular with SVX owners. Again, see the How-To section. Here are a few threads, many with links to pictures:
Finally a Subar 6 disc for the anal- no cutting required

WRX 6 disc player instl?

Installed a WRX stereo

WRX stereo swap?

WRX 6-disc changer installed

Stereo swap
Personally, I prefer to stick with aftermarket to gain a few more features for the $ — more radio presets, MP3, easy aux in, iPod/Sirius/XM capability, etc. Some models have recently even started including USB ports (think flash memory drive with lots of MP3s). I'm considering changing to one with Nav next time.

Sorry, but I don't have any specific recommendations. Crutchfield.com is a good place to window shop. They have detailed pictures and lots of information. With their excellent customer service and return policy, you might opt to buy from them too.

if you want my opinion go with a D DIN stereo jvc has a couple of good ones so does kenwood as they fill the hole perfectly and as for how to get a hold of SVXdc on this site or look in the" how to docs" his link to how to change it, is there. it is fairly easy to change it just be careful

So, I need to replace the whole system? I cannot just replace the CD player?

Only if you used a SVX or OEM CD player. You cant get a aftermarket CD player to match the DIN of the OEM stereo. At least as far as I know, you cant.
It would be easier to just upgrade the whole head unit.
