Unhappy Tranny fluid pressure

Thinking about installing a fluid pressure gauge for the tranny. Anyone know the operating fluid pressure range?

Hay What a great idea. I was thinking of the same thing. The line pressure plug is easy to get to. It is up front, driver side on the case. Section 3-2, page 121 of the 1992 manual says line pressure is 64 to 82 psi at idle and 206 to 230 psi in reverse at stall speed. This is when the torque converter has minimum slip. About 1,422 to 1,589 rpm in reverse.

I am looking for a digital gauge. Do you know of any?
Actually I want a gauge in the transfer section also.

I'm considering installing the sending unit in the hose after the coolers before the tranny. I am surprised at the high pressure. Dumb-dumb me guessed 30psi as normal. I need to tighten all clamps on the hoses or double up on the clamps. I have not come across a digital gauge, will check for one. Thanks for the info.

I agree this pressure seems high to me. Any one else with a manual want to check and make sure I am not reading this wrong? Anyone who has ever measured this pressure care to share what they found?

I talked to a tranny rebuilder in Portland today, normal pressure 90 psi, in reverse 140 psi.
Way higher than I imagined.

I think KuoH3 on the Yahoo site has a pic of his digital guage in his yahoo briefcase. You may check it out, then, do a search on the yahoo archive to get details.

JC Whitney has digital gauges.

I would install right after the cooler, as close to the cooler as you can, since this will be the highest pressure after the cooler. The filter should go before the cooler. I may do this too. Thanks for the pressure ranges.

Cool Full ash tray

Tranny fluid pressure gauge is up an running. Along with the temp gauge the ash tray be full.
The sender for pressure is in the rubber hose after the coolers before the tranny. It's the lowest pressure spot. I used a tee to mount the sender, had to put a ground wire on it with a hose clamp. After one test run the readings were: 50psi at startup, 75psi WOT, 25psi coasting or going down hill, 50psi cruising at 2100rpm.

Any other ATF pressure gauges? What are your readings?

David

Good Job

Thanks for the info. It will be helpful, although I have a Level 10 tranny, which should run much more line pressure due to the tuned hydrostem valvebody.

Chuck, go for it!! Again, the sending unit for pressure is after the aux filter, radiator cooler and tube/fin cooler just before the return to the tranny.
