When you get to be 78 like me, you will mellow out a bit and relax and do it in half the time!

If I mellow out any more I'll fall a sleep and turn into jerky in the desert heat. I just hope I make it to 78, God bless.

Re: Transmission flush

You have to remember that 120 bucks covers more than just the fluid. And you can (generally) avoid idiots by going to a reputable repair shop, or the dealership. Quick lube places, in most cases, can't mechanic their way out of a paper bag.

And those external spin on filters are, according to Subaru, lifetime, but I'd replace it at least at 60k, but not every 5k lol they are like $40! (Only ones I have ever replaced have been ones that Goofy Lube tried to take off and ****ed up lol, cuz they do not come off very easily, and most of the time the lube pit monkey will try and take it off thinking it is the engine oil filter, crushing it, and making it leak lol...)

But yeah, the internal filter is more of a pick up screen than a filter, just keeps big particles out of the tranny.

If the dealer/shop is doing the fluid exchange, does it generally include this as well? What's the procedure for this?

Re: Transmission flush

Depends on the car. On a car like a Subaru where the front differential is separate from the rest of the transmission, i.e., not lubricated by the same fluid, a transmission fluid exchange does include changing the front diff, which is pretty simple to do, you drain the diff (22mm bolt on the old ones, Torx (T70 IIRC) on the newer ones, reinstall the drain plug with a new washer, and then fill it from the dipstick tube with the proper lubricant.

This will depend on the dealership though, some dealerships will say the trans flush is ONLY the trans, and it's an extra x$ to change the diff fluid, others will include it.

Re: Transmission flush

Do the diffs yourself, very simple, 2 quarts of 75-90W gear lube.

The best for our trannys is: EXCHANGE, gets ALL the old fluid out, ALL the new fluid in without major turbulence breaking loose crap to cause other problems. If you have used syn ATF then you will have less crap in there to start with

Is this 2 quarts of 75-90W gear lube for the rear and 2 quarts of 75-90W gear lube for the front.

Does it come in synthetic also?

Thanks,
Keith

Yes, I use Royal Purple synthetic gear lube. See Old Tom's post above, 1.3 quarts front, .8 qt rear=2.1 total qts
