Ball Joints

How long did/have yours lasted?

Also which side(s) did you change?

I haven't replaced the ball joints on my SVX, so I won't vote in your poll. But I will say that at about 150,000 miles my wife's Legacy had a ball joint start showing a little slop. But that was only one ball joint. The other seems fine.

The SVX's ball joints, at 133,000 miles, seems fine.

I have one SVX ball joint ready to fall out and it looks like the previous owner changed the other side already (<70,000miles).

The Justy's original ball joints were perfect even after 185,000 miles.

I just replaced mine at 99,000 miles. Both of the originals had no obvious free play when I removed them. Good insurance I guess.

Just replaced both joints at 120K-miles and my mech was told by his parts guy that he "never" sold any of these, and was asked "what happened to screw them up?". I ended up buying replacements from Dave, aka "red95svx", at significant savings I might add! I surmise that someone, changing CV boots/axles, screwed them up. I replaced the swaybar links as well cuz they were showing some obvious age and wear. The ball joints were a MESS, and the very annoying "knock" is gone!!

No vote from me, either, as I don't know whether or not mine might have been replaced before I got the car, but I will toss-in that after something like half a million miles in 4WD or AWD Subarus, I've yet to replace a suspension or steering linkage component, period.*

I'd be interested in knowing if there's any correlation between SVX ball joint failures and geography; that is, areas that use road salt. (If not the salt, perhaps it's the typically lousy roadways.)

dcb

*EDIT: That is, unless SVX rear wheel bearings count as suspension components.

Ball Joint

Hi everyone, I haven't had too replace ball joints on my SVX but I recently had to replace the tie rod ends. My SVX has just under 100,000 miles on it. I am the second owner of the '92 SVX and have had it since October 1997. It had 31,000 miles on it when I got it. Take care, BOBB
