Factory Cam Specs

Okay, I'm not sure at what amount of lift the durations are measured at...figured it was a nice piece of info to add to this thread
-Bill

and a little info to see if we can use anyone else's valve springs...

Cam. specs.

There is a lot of good info there Bill. Take a bit of time to go through them all, see what there is and what Delta can match up with. They look like they are all 4 valve engines, with some hyd, and some solids.

I think the duration is at 0.006". The same as the 240* that the WSM quotes for the eg33.

Harvey.

Harvey,
I'm trying to walk the fine line with Scott of keeping this effort in his frontal lobe, yet not being a "pest"
It appears that the cores that he thought were VG30DEs weren't, so he said he's going to look around some more to see if he can find another set.
As I'm feeling a little lazy right now, do you have the lobe center degree spec for our stock intake and exhaust cams?
-Bill
p.s. is your computer program set up to do trades on intake runner length? I can do the runner area vs torque peak rpm trade now, but I'll run out of aluminum before I get much above the current ~4800 rpm.

Yes mate don't want to cruel a good thing.

The lobe centers are Inlet 114* ATDC, Exhaust 113* BTDC. This is from the timing figures, the actually figures have not been measured, so if the opening and closing ramps are not symmetrical, the lobe centers would be different.

What do you mean? do you want to shorten the inlet tracts to raise the peak
torque rpms.?

Harvey.

Update

Well, I just got off the phone with Scott (again) and the guy that promised to send over VG30DE cores still hasn't, so Scott promised to get on the phone to him today to "nudge" him about it. As my current 193k+ engine is starting to show its age, I'm definitely ready to get into the "spare" engine in the garage

Harvey,

The info sheet found above lists different opening and closing ramps for the cam lobes.

If that can be relied on. The opening ramp is faster than the closing ramp.
I would still like to see it measured to be sure.

Harvey.

Update -- 11/6/2006

Okay, spoke with Scott at the end of last week and he's having no luck with VG30DE cores - last one he got was - again - the wrong cam. Good news is that I just bought two VG30DE heads with cams! I'll be shipping the cams to Scott as soon as they show up.

I don't quite understand are we goin for top end power or low end, I think the car excels at 4-7rpm. So I would rather have cam lobes that meet that catorgy, is that what you have in mind? I don't mind being a little slower off the line as long as I fly at top end. lol

Bill, since you have the head as well, take a look at the valve train... See if we could adopt their springs and valves for our own

Bill,

Did Scott measure the cams?

Matt,

Now that you made the Rally, can you tell us what cams, valves, springs, etc. you finally used?

Anyhoo. Here's some random learnings.

Valve spring coil bind occurs at or about 9mm (no news there).

Using only a regrind profile (ie no welding as well), the most lift you'll get out of the cam is 9.6mm. This is a limitation of the cam journal size.

WRX valves are the same diameter (36mm/32mm) but have 104mm stems rather than our piddly 90mm.

Hydraulic buckets can have their centre bored out to make them solid. WRX buckets are solid and are also 33mm so "should fit"*

In theory* a complete WRX valve, spring, retainer and bucket should go in the same slot as the EG33...thereby rewarding us with more lift potential...for a reasonably low cost.

* - this will be tested when I get to have a play with some WRX valves in the next few days.

Matt
