If it aint broke?
My tranny fluid is pretty dirty and at 98k has never been changed. I'm not having transmission problems per say, but is a flush a good thing to do if all seems well?
I have heard stories that flushing can sometimes hurt the tranmission more than help it, due to the fact that the old transmission is so rich with something or other, that flushing the old stuff causes the transmission to break apart? I probably explained that horribly, but maybe someone's heard something similar? |

slowly drain out your old fluid and replace it with new fluid over time. A flush can give your tranny a big shock and it could get so happy it can just break apart.

Thanks for the reply Seraph. I'd like to go about doing the drain. I understand I should drain it, then fill it, then drain it etc.
Is there a plug I can pull out and then just put a bucket underneath the car to let it drain out? That'd pretty much be the onlly way I'd be able to do it on my own, otherwise I'd be forced to use a dealership, who would flush it all out. How do you all do your drain? |

I've been following the Seraph (Lwin) method at every other oil change on the 92 since I bought it. I drain the old tranny fluid and replace it with new synth. fluid. The first time I replaced the aux. filter. I will replace it again in a week along with the filter.
Yeah it's costly but I consider it to be cheap insurance. PS: I'm driving the 92 up to Union NJ today on business. Yesterday we were up at Merck in Rahway. A bunch of us went in a rented Pontiac minivan. Enterprise rent-a-car gave it to us with only 3/8's of a tank of gas + a big chip in the windshield. What a POS. On the t'pike the hood popped up. It's a good thing the second latch held. I did not see any SVXes. I'll look again today.

Measure what you take out and put inthe same amount. I had a complete flush done when I bought mine as the fluid was brown and I think it worked fine. You may want to get your rear wheel drive checked to make sure it works.

Actually, I talked to a guy who owns a transmission shop 2 days ago. He said the flushing is fine, and that its a myth that its bad. HE also said this 'myth' has never attacked him and he's been running this shop for over 20 years.
