Re: wheel bearing failure

How can you tell when a front bearing goes? What are the symptoms?

Re: wheel bearing failure

Both front wheels will be pointing the opposite way. That's what happened to mine.

Re: wheel bearing failure

were your bearings grinding/howling for awhile? Seems odd for them to "let go" out of nowhere...

^this...
I've never had one go without lots of warning. And when they went my wheels didn't point in.

Are you sure it's not a tie rod?

Re: wheel bearing failure

In years past I've driven with snarling wheel bearings for months but never had one just "go out." Total, simultaneous failure of more than one seems extremely unlikely.

How can you tell when wheel bearings are going bad? A whine/drone that increases in frequency with speed. Not hard to localize. Gets worse with time. When I bought my teal at +104,000 mi. the rear bearings sounded like rolling 55-gallon drums half filled with marbles.

Re: wheel bearing failure

Having made ( R&D ) bearings for Torrington and later Timken for combined 38 years, bearings from extensive testing they should not explode. Failure is usually slow and noisy. you maybe play your radio too loud. The car I just bought had failing front bearings. PO told me they were bad . I could not hear them during my short test drive . He said he could tell when he was changing the tires. He replaced them and had it realigned before he delivered the car. Timing belt idler bearings were going also . I did hear them,They make a chirping sound. He replaced timing belt and them too before delivery.

Agree with Dave, wheels pointing in opposite direction s a broken tie rod, not wheel bearing...much easier to fix too...

My thoughts exactly. Which is why I asked the question I did.

Re: wheel bearing failure

Bearing failure would look more like a ball joint failure, TOE in or TOE out (Top in Top out wobble )Quite shuttle actually

Re: wheel bearing failure

I've seen the wobble from a worn front bearing. The wheel will wobble as if the lugs are slightly loose.

Re: wheel bearing failure

It is the wheel bearings. I was towing the car to a friends house to put in the transmission and right at the end of my street they gave out. And no it made NO noise what so ever, the only thing that was preventing this from happening was the cv axles. The bearings came OUT of the knuckles.

Re: wheel bearing failure

Both at the same time? That's pretty nuts. Wouldn't they have to have fallen clean off to point in different directions? I think we all want pics?
