I was there too,
None of the XT6's had any incidents this year (unlike last year), I've heard the rumor that the girls in the Miata were airlifted, but also heard the airlift was for a biker, and the girls just suffered some scrapes.

We XT6es ran up on Chris's car after the incident, it was on a reducing radius curve on the Skyway, not the Dragon, looks like he went in to hot, braked, got the rear end loose, then spun into the inside wall, he said he was OK, but I know he was upset, I really hate it for him, he’s a great guy.

It’s a great road, but there are crashes there every weekend, mostly bikes, as it is a bigger bike Mecca, than it is for the cars.
As long as you run a pace you feel comfortable with it’s not to bad, but trying to keep up with someone else’s pace can get you bit…..quickly.

I love the road, I’m sure I used up about 6 months worth of rubber off my tires over the weekend, but wouldn’t have missed it for the world, we had the bigges gathering of XT6’er ever (only 8 members made it there) but it was a really fun time, wish it was more than a couple days….

Thank you everyone for your concern. I will tell the whole story as soon as I get off the Rifle range and get back to my computer. I am also dealing with the insurance company at the moment and am trying to figure out what to do. After that if there still are people that want to see pictures of the accident and damage then I'll post it. I'll also tell the whole story about what happened. I'll ALSO post my new thoughts on "the Dragon". Again this will probably be next week before I get any time to do this since I am getting up at 0400 in the morning to be at the Rifle Range at 0530 and shoot all day till Friday when we run some field exersizes. Talk to everyone later...

I refuse to go on any of those cruises in utah, the stupid kids here who had their STis and WRXs handed to them seem to send them over guard rails, into medians, roll them and Ive talked to them and they blame it on...."loose gravel" so awhile back i posted making fun of them because it was a joint Suby Mazda Cruise and all the RX-7s stayed on the road, 3 subys flipped....was hilarious, mazdas didnt stop to check on them, stupid people deserve to wreck....

We just drifted it up the mountain and went on our own marry way....

I agree. Sounds very funny, and what a mature thing to do. Just keep on going. No need to help out.

Dragon tales

It's great to hear that you're OK Chris....and I hope the car is fixed real soon.

Jean and I did the Dragon on our anniversary, just before Christmas, in our SVT Focus. The weather was good and we passed ONE car on the entire length of the run! I don't want
to think about meeting bikes across the centerline head-on!
Any future returns will be AFTER the peak season, that's for sure!

All the best, Don and Jean

***** *****, people. If you weren't present at the event, then shut the hell up about it.

I organize the event.

I've organized it the last FIVE YEARS.

Every year we have someone do something stupid and crack up their own car.

This is not a result of other people's behavior acting on them... this is the result of their inability to moderate their OWN behavior. This is not a crack on Chris, he knows full well what the deal is there.

There were NOT any rollovers. There were NOT any deaths. I'm sick and ****** TIRED of people spouting such utter BULL about this.

A guy on a motorcycle wrecked about 30 miles away from where we were, and later died. His accident had NOTHING to do with the fact there were Subarus having a MEET/JAMBOREE on the other side of the mountain.

Two people on bikes died in traffic accidents in Atlanta last weekend too... did that have anything to do with Subaru owners having a meet?

Some teenage girls in a Miata flipped their car over on Rt. 28 because they were driving too fast for the conditions and their abilities. Their mistake had NOTHING to do with the fact that some Subaru owners were having a meet 20 miles to the northwest of them.

There were TWO ACCIDENTS at the Dragon this year involving Subarus. This is not something that resulted from people driving in a group or any sort of unsafe environment. It was a case of two people who exceeded their own personal safety limits WHILE DRIVING ALONE, with no other cars in front or following them.

In fact, let me make this clear... NEITHER OF THOSE ACCIDENTS OCCURRED ON THE DRAGON!

I work very hard to ensure the safety of the group up there, many people seem to forget that the reason we meet at the Dragon is NOT to drive fast, in fact it is not to drive at all. It is to meet with other Subaru owners from all over the country, in a beautiful woodland setting far from civilization.

We have never had an injury of any kind in the 5 years we've been going to the Dragon (twice a year!) and I intend to keep it that way. Every year we have in excess of 100 Subarus in attendance, and I think our track record for group safety is excellent.

Those of you who don't want to come, that's your perogative. But you don't have the right to disparage the event or those who attend it through your utterly misplaced sense of "danger" or "responsibility".

Frankly, those who have not attended the event before have no idea what it consists of, and therefore no basis from which to judge it.

Those of you who are curious about what the event actually involves, and what kind of environment we promote, feel free to contact me via PM. I haven't been on this board much lately because frankly I got sick of the negativity. Hopefully the site is changing for the better.

Thank you,

Jason Porter

See this thread for further information, and comments from people who attended.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=573865

Notice that those who attended thought it was safe and fun, and those who did NOT attend thought it was "horribly dangerous".

I see a pattern here....

Just my take on this - you are over reacting. I think that you are more defensive than you should be because you have been involved with it. Keep up the good work.

I don't think this was a crack on the event at all. What I think they were trying to say was that the road itself is pretty dangerous in the fact that there are motorcyclists and motorists that drive beyond their ability and wreck, or do stupid things like cross the double yellow around a blind turn. What they're saying is they don't want to get mixed up in that and run the chance of getting their car wrecked and/or themselves injured or killed by people treating the public road as a closed, controlled race track. Thats their prerogative. And to tell you the truth, I agree with them 100%. I don't think their attitude is negative in the least bit, nor did they knock the meet in any way.

You're both completely missing my point (and theirs).

The statements that were made were that the road sounds awesome, but that they wouldn't be attending any large events there, because it's too dangerous.

If you don't think that's commentary on the meet, then maybe we have incompatible reading comprehension.

It's the same nonsense we get from a number of extremely negative, offensive people on NASIOC...

"Yeah, I'm looking forward to going up there, but I'll go on the following Tuesday, I don't want to be there with the group because it's too dangerous."

That statement is a total fallacy and I do take it personally when people try to inflict their ignorance on others... such statements are calculated to try to discourage other owners from attending, and I think it's out of line considering most of the people who make such statements have never attended themselves.

I've said it before, and I'll reiterate... the event is not about driving on the Dragon. It just happens to be nearby and it's convenient to refer to the event in that way. I didn't drive across the Dragon a single time in my four days up there this year. The real POINT of the event is to spend a lot of time hanging out, having fun, and getting to know other Subaru enthusiasts...

In other words, it's just like the Reading meet but in a beautiful mountain setting.

Why is that bad? Why is that ill-advised? I don't get it. And I don't get people's knee-jerk reaction to it.

It's like people hear "The Dragon" and this mental image of a bunch of wackos street racing around on curvy roads suddenly appears. The reality is quite different.
