Lightbulb Why Ricers Loud Exhaust? Answer Inside..

I got to thinking yesterday about how great it is that my WRX is pretty quiet at WOT.. you hear a nice scream from the boxer 4, a bit of whine from the turbo, and that's about it. I started wondering why ricers so enjoy the idea of an exhaust note which overpowers their engine.. after all, the real beauty of a car is the way the motor spins, not the gunk it spits out..

anyway, I realized something: ricer exhausts (hereafter referred to as "fart cans") serve as an Early Warning System for those of us walking and driving in their paths. I mean, let's think about this.. it's possible to gain a few horsepower by opening up the exhaust path, sure, but do you have to tune the muffler to resonate at an obscene volume level to do so? NO. In fact, many aftermarket exhausts will actually SACRIFICE power because each car's stock exhaust system is specifically designed to work with the engine it's attached to.

so somehow a very intelligent human being realized that all around the country, kids were going to buy cars, trick them out, and drive around public streets like complete idiots. so he or she decided to market "custom" exhausts which would scream like banshees whenever the driver was accelerating at a rapid rate, giving warning so that all respectable people within earshot would be aware of the presence of an irresponsible driver.

so, in a sense, fart-can exhausts are a public service!

does this make a LOT of sense to anyone else?

That's the coolest observation I've seen on here in a while! You know, I never thought of it that way, but it's so true...

I have to agree with you whole heartedly, Adam. And to think I only saw it as a means to make their underpowered crap-mobiles sound like they had somethingmore going on. You know, some "blang" to go with the "bling"!

You fart on the can or in your car, not put a fart can on your car.

Nah...it's escaine. Trust me, I know from experience. When I had my Isuzu Trooper I had not a care in the world and created more methane inside of it than a herd of cows. Eventually, no matter how long you left the windows open, the smell would always come back. Let's just say the wife was never happy to go anywhere with me in it. I ended up selling it.

LOL...that's too funny! It actualy excuses his use of a fartcan in my book. Gotta love a sense of humor!
