Help! - Tranny is DEAD

I have a 94 LS (FWD). Just recently the car will not engage in any of the forward gears. It drives for a little then it disengages. Dealer claims that it needs a new tranny and has quote me $3,500 for a refurbished one. Is there cheaper route? -e.g., rebuilding tranny? Could this be anything other than transmission problem?

Just an FYI, the car has little over 100K miles, new timing belt, water pump, and synthetic tranny fluid.

Thanks in advance!

I hope you haven't been driving it much in that condition. It may be worth your while to change the external filter and fluid before you pull the tranny.

I will give that a try...but my fluids are full and looks decent.

BTW, are you supposed to release the shift lock to check your TCU codes?

Thanks

Yes the shift un-lock is needed to move the lever.
