Daughter Mechanic

I am proud of my daughter for doing some work on her SVX that many on here won't even attempt. I sent her a set of manuals and there were some phone conversations, but she did ALL the work herself. She 5'1" and 100lbs.

Her car started missing suddenly and she consulted a couple supposedly reputable mechanics--not Subaru. Both told her it was a head gasket, but after we talked at length I was not convinced it was the gasket.

I sent her the instructions on how to read trouble codes and she did and it indicated the driver side knock sensor was bad and same side oxygen sensor. That would not explain the bad missing problem she was having (much worse than would be with bad knock sensor), but told her to replace just the knock sensor and read codes again for oxygen sensor. Sure enough the oxygen code went away after she replaced the knock sensor.

But, the car continued to have a very bad miss. I told her that sounded like it might be the timing belt. So, she started taking things off to get to the timing belt and noticed that the harmonic balancer was coming apart. To me that gave a logical explanation for possibly jumping timing. Sure enough the timing belt appeared to be brand new, but was off by several notches. The balancer (crank pulley) had deteriorated so much that it was wobbling and even wore through the front cover.

I sent her a used balancer and she put it on. She completed the job yesterday and called today to tell me that it was purring like a kitten. That was a tremendous amount of pretty complicated work for a professional dancer. She just wore gloves to protect her hands, but did all the work by herself except that she needed help in torquing the crank bolt to specs.

So the next time some of you yayhoos moan about some little job being to difficult to tackle yourself--look this up and read it again.

The car.
Lee

Thumbs up

She is an exceptional girl Lee.

You are entitled to be as proud of her as you obviously are.

Mechanically, she is obviously simpatico. Gifted.

If she arrives in Ireland anytime, she can drive my car.

Joe

Over 15 years ago, walking to the car with my daughter for a driving lesson in my '86 Subaru GL wagon, I told her she'd first have to remove the left-rear tire and successfully mount the spare before we could leave the driveway. I remember being tickled by her reaction to discovering that the spare was located in the engine bay. We didn't get far.

Which reminds me, I probably should buy her a couple of cans of fix-a-flat.

I'm dead serious! I need a Single Female Subaru Lover (SFSL)... All of my girlfriends just couldn't seem to understand my passion for my car and all other Subarus... I guess that just means that I have to find one that does love Subarus ... lhopp77, send her on down to Raleigh and I'll teach her to change a driveshaft and clutch on a swapped SVX in the near future
