While your point may be true, modding an automatic will always be worth my time. Besides, 99% of my drives in the car are < 20 miles, so the whole mileage bit wouldn't really bother me.

I noticed you're in Iowa.. You'll want to put your aftermarket cooler inline with the stock cooler that's in the radiator, although I can't remember whether you want it before or after the stock one, because without it in cold climates the transmission fluid doesn't warm up enough and it will take forever until it finally warms up enough to shift into overdrive.

this is kind of off topic, but on monday, i decided to see what would happen by ditching the premium fuel and put in a full tank of 85 octane regular unleaded. blackie didn't seem to mind and rewarded with me with a stellar 27.50 mpg. we'll see how the next tank goes.

Because the fuelling and timing system is controlled via the ECU on a closed loop, and because the SVX has a knock sensor for each bank of cylinders, the nett effect of using sub premium petrol [or gas] will be to create more detonation in the engine, which in turn will be compensated by the ECU detecting it via the sensors and retarding the ignition. In real terms this means your engine will work less efficiently. It will not pull as well at low revs [as well as with advanced ignition ] but will probably be the same at mid range revs as normal. You will probably be getting a little less HP and torque than at optimum tune, but not bad enough so you will think the brakes are on. The computer does it all for you. Having said all that, I much prefer to use premium when I can get it. It is uncommon here in Ireland, so I have had to run my car for years on the poorer stuff. It manages without a murmur. Joe

Svx Mpg
I never check the in town mileage, mainly because I never can afford to fill up the tank. However, I take a 6 hour trip from my home in central texas down to south texas once a month and I consistently get 30MPG, I have even had up to 33 on one very flat leg of the trip. I have the FWD SVX, and was wondering if it helped out at all, without the extra weight and universal joints, you'd think it would.
P.S. I always use 93 octane when I can find it, 91 the lowest. also the previous owner changed out the tranny, and I'm not sure what it is at all. I have the paperwork on the change, part numbers and all, if anyone would like a shot at figuring out what it is, let me know! Last edited by sd2649; 09-24-2007 at 09:25 PM. |

I took a trip to Kutztown and came back today. Went 197 miles (some was in town) and put in 7 gallons. That comes out to 28mpg. That was pretty much not going faster than 75 and no a/c.

I average around 20 mpg mixed with 4.44 gears. I used to get way better but i can't seem to figure out why I'm not getting higher. My car has new o2 sensors, knock sensors, filters and everything short of the sparkplugs, which are about to hit 50k on them.

Yes, and that's why you get 20mpg mixed.

The closer you have your SVX to Stock, the better your mileage seems to be.

As par as tranny recomendations here are mine... If you are wanting to do a manual swap I'd recommend a WRX tranny. Mainly because you just slot that in there (new tranny crossmember, lenthen the driveshaft by about 2" and the same for the shifter linkage) and you are fine. With all the other tranny's you'll have to get a matching rear diff. And if you want to keep your limited slip in the rear that mean s actually opening the rear diff up, etc.... If you are going with a Manual tranny, I've heard good things about the Outback tranny with the 4.44 final... Although I really know almost nothing about that swap so I'm not a good person to comment on it... ~ Chris

My '95 got 30+mpg at +85mph (not being babied either). And it gets about 22-24mpg in the city. But its getting a 4.44 tranny, the pearl with have a 4.11, and my ebony has a stock tranny so after i get everything swapped ill comment on the differences.
