Chike has the same two exhaust pipes going straight into a 2.5" DOUBLE inlet/single outlet high-flow cat. Is there an advantage to the "Y"?
Yes there is a difference John. With the standard system the high pressure in one pipe, can not enter the other pipe. As the two pipes are connected in the low pressure area in the front of the cat, the other pipe will only receive a low pressure pulse.
If a Y pipe is used to join the two pipes, the high pressure from one will enter the other, at the same pressure, to send a high pressure front up to the other bank. Thats why they go to the expense to fit the twin inlet third cat, instead of a cheap Y pipe.

i think im gonna go with leaving the 2 cats at the front and just putting in a Y pipe where the 3rd cat is and get rid of the resonator and put the muffler up there and have 2 pipes going ou tthe back and instead of 3' pipe i will go with 2.5.

I'm not sure if I agree or fully understand this comment. The way I read it the high pressure would have to pass through the center cat material before it could pass up to the other bank. This is not true as there is an empty area at the front of the center cat before the actual cat material.

No Dave, thats what I said, I think, The front of the third cat is an empty area. This is the low pressure area, where the two engine pipes join. The ceramic dice is after this area.
I think you are still a bit "fishey eyed" I don't want to have mussel you around mate. OK I'll clam up now.
