All this talk is making me want to autox today. Sadly I have to wait for the 18th for the next one in Harrisburg .
On a side note I was reading up on my rules Friday night and it seems that in order for a car to be eligable for autoxing in the SCCA the vehicle needs to be sold at a US dealership in quatities of at least 1000 in a 12 month period. Now I know that there weren't that many 97s made let alone all shipped to the US so I'm wondering if the 97s would techincally be eligable or not for stock and street prepared? It doesn't elaborate as to if the quatities need to be every year of manufacture but it also doesn't say that it can be 1000 during any year the car was made.

. I promise not to tell Bill. That is if he can ever get his car through tech with his recent rash of trouble . I'm currently 3rd in class (H stock) for the XT6. Would be 1st had I not miss classed myself the first week but still took a respectable 5th against a group of 10 with 3 Mini S. Just put on new rear KYB shocks (replacing the 180k originals), did a complete tune up, and finally ordered me some magnetic numbers and class letters. I expect the numbers will be translate into a huge jump in my standings.

I made magnetic numbers for my car before the last event. I bought 5"x8" magnetic sheets from Michael's (a craft store) for $2.50 each. Then I used MS Word to print out letters about 6" high. I traced around those letters with a ballpoint pen, pressing pretty hard. Then I used that indentation to cut the letters and numbers out. You can get the magnetic sheets in plain white or with an adhesive front you can stick other materials to. Edit: I found that the magnetic numbers I made stick to the car very well, even though I accidentally left them on when I drove home on the freeway. Many home-made numbers I've seen come off the cars easily.

I've got a whole roll of magnetic sheet material -- it was much cheaper than a set of numbers/letters. I actually ordered from a company that specializes in everything magnetic -- the sheet material is extra heavy to insure that the numbers/letters don't come off at highway speeds.
I followed the same routine as Mr. Pockets to make my letters and numbers. -Bill p.s. PM me if you want to try to make your own letters/numbers, I'll ship you the material -- I've got more than I'll ever be able to use

Total agreement on memorizing the course. Unfortunately, our club only allows enough time for about 2 walk throughs before we start running. The good news is thet we get 2 "practice" laps where times don't count. Some people take the practice laps at full speed. I'm not sure why. I like to take them at a pace where I have the time to remember the course.
I run in autocrosses, but not in my SVX, so I can't be part of the Offical SVX Team. For new auto-xers (or potential auto-xers), check out this link: http://www.tirerack.com/features/solo2/handbook.htm Pay special attention to the Course Walking Tips and the Driving Tips. Matt |

But I also know that some people have a hard time visualizing the course in their heads and need that practice run to understand it. I work in 3 dimensions all day long, so maybe that helps me. As for novices, I don't recommend my approach. Not that I'm real 'advanced' or anything - if you find yourself frequently requiring a few runs to figure the course out, then don't go out there at full tilt. Follow Matt's technique.
