Trans Swapout

I have a 92 (silver/black) that is going to need a transmission soon (beginning to get steering stutter when I make a slow turn, i.e. from the driveway to the street). Also have a 96 that had the transmission replaced 3 yrs ago. I'm wondering if the transmission from the 96 can be swapped into the 92? (Then I'm gonna have to unload the '96...getting too expensive to keep both.) The Aamco guy (who replaced the trans in my 96) said it can't be done because of the OBD1/OBD2 issues between the 2 cars. Is he correct?

THANX for your comments.

Re: Trans Swapout

Is the stutter the AWD not releasing properly or could it be air in your power steering lines? (o-ring issue?)

Re: Trans Swapout

Good questions, and THANX for the ideas. I don't think it's the PS belt. It looks to be in good shape, and the reservior is right on the money. As for the AWS not releasing, how would I check that?

Re: Trans Swapout

U can't tell by looking at a belt . Mine looked like new . I tightened the heck out of it and it still slipped . I got a new belt and it was perfect

Re: Trans Swapout

I am fairly certain you could swap trannies between the OBD1 and 2 cars without issue.

SVXFILES, the Aamco guy said right away that the OBD1/OBD2 issues would be the problem. Made me think that he knew what he was talking about. So is there a nationwide place that I could go to to get this done? (maybe a 2nd opinon from a 2nd Aamco guy?). I'm just concerned that if I do this, and it doesn't work out, I'm in bad shape.

Re: Trans Swapout

AAMCO has in my experience one universal quality... Of bad rebuilds at not very good prices.

Re: Trans Swapout

I've also heard terrible things about AAMCO and SVX transmissions.

Electrically the OBD 1 and 2 transmissions are exactly the same, you should experience no trouble whatsoever. One of the best transmission swaps into any SVX is a 98 4.44 automatic, which is OBD2. So an OBD1/2 auto swap into an SVX has been done many, many times successfully.

Re: Trans Swapout

Well, THANX for all of the food for thought. I will keep this in mind while making my decision. The '92 (the silver one in the foreground in my picture) is the 2nd car. The '96 is the 'every day' car. So it's not pressing at this time, as the symptoms are minor. As always, this site is informative because of the members experience, and I appreciate that benefit. Hopefully I can pass it on.
