Airbag woes, Round II

My '94 SVX had an interior swap performed by a former owner. He put a '92 interior in the car. '94's had passenger airbags, 92's did not, so my car has an airbag connector hanging loose behind the glovebox. And the "AIRBAG" warning light is on constantly.

"No big deal", says the former owner who did the swap. "Just put an airbag computer in the car from a '92 and you'll be good to go." So I got an airbag 'puter from a '92, tore 2/3 of the interior out, and swapped it in.

It is anticlimactic, I'm sorry to say, but - the airbag light is still on.

I'm weighing my choices at this point. Additional options and/or ideas about any of the options below are welcome.
  1. Obtain a P/S airbag from a '94 and connect it up (sounds expensive, especially for something that may not work)
  2. Fake the computer into thinking there is an airbag connected (ideas anyone?)
  3. Disable the warning light (sounds illegal)
  4. Punt!

Like I said, I'm open to suggestion. At this point, with the dash ripped open, it would be fair to say that I'm w-i-d-e open.

Re: Airbag woes, Round II

Have you tried pulling codes from the SRS computer?

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38185

There's a post here that says how to do it. Very similar to checking ECU codes.

Get a charcoal dash/airbag from a Blue, Pearlie94 or any L model SVX.

Awesome, thanks. I did not come up with that, despite what I thought of as a pretty thorough search of the site. I'll see what it tells me.

I already figured out that the connectors have their own special gizmos with which to signal the 'puter that they're disconnected. For example the steering column connector has a metal tab that shorts two of the pins together when it is disconnected. I just haven't figured out how to trick them into thinking they're okay.

I know people do things in WRX's, when they swap out the stock seats for aftermarket seats, to trick the airbag system. (Imprezas have a side-impact airbag in the seat.) I was hoping for something similar for the SVX.

Re: Airbag woes, Round II

If you can link to the WRX trick you're talking about, I'd like to see it.

Re: Airbag woes, Round II

If the connectors are not securely engaged the light will trigger. If you are missing one, then the light will also trigger. Check the schematics, a return signal is probably needed. Maybe you can install a jumper? But wait until someone with more experience gives you the proper advice on how to do it.

Re: Airbag woes, Round II

Surprise! The resistor value for all the Subarus except the SVX that fools the airbag circuit is different than ours! Last I knew, the answer still eluded us.
