It is far easier for governments to blanket ban smoking from all public bars, restaurants etc, than to try and differentiate say between hot prepared food and sandwiches, potatoe chips etc.

I am all for a total smoking ban in restaurants, including pipes and cigars, which I like but realise they permeate more, and have stronger odours. I would temper that by saying some of the best places I have been have a totally separate lounge area where you can go to finish your coffee and have a smoke. This is a reasonable solution that appeals to me, and allows people to eat in a completely smoke-free room. Best of both worlds.

The situation is made difficult for businesses by the passive smoking effect on non-smoking bar staff. While agreeing with Cigar Johnny that some families are genetically predisposed to cancer, there is a very clear relationship between lung cancer and heavy smoking or long-term exposure. It is fatalistic and wrong to say some cancer will get you whether you smoke or not.

I'm a Levis man, still on for Freedom of Choice. I would like to see legislation allow for creatures of habit, and allow pubs and restaurants have a separate Smoking Room for habitual smokers.
