windshield source

Hello everyone,
Does anyone have a source for a blue windshield in the Pacific NW? I have a driver and two parts cars and zero good windshields. Thanks!

I'm not always 100% current on things, but the way I understand it from what I hear on these forums is that new windshields are basically gone in either tint. Lots of gloom and doom about how a broken windshield is the end of our cars. Like I said, not 100% sure, but if you search around that's the word a lot of people are claiming.

Now there are stories of really experienced glass guys being able to successfully remove them from parts cars without damaging them and then able to install them. Sounds like it's pretty difficult and results in failure more often than not, but may be what we are down too unless any new ones are hiding somewhere.

Re: windshield source

Yes please do. It seems like there are always these "My dealer says there are only 3 so-and-so left in the world and they are all in Japan" posts, and then a few months later 5 different people say their mechanic had no problem ordering one.

If you are interested in going the used route and want to try to pursue the removal process somehow, I am looking at a parts car tomorrow and from the pictures the windshield "might" be intact. It's a claret car though so it would be a bronze windshield. Either way, I'll report back.

Re: windshield source

At last word, as of a week ago, there are 24 windshields. They are all green tint without the titanium oxide coating. There is a chinese aftermarket available in all 3 tint colors, however these do not come with new seals. The seal only comes with OEM new windshields and cannot be ordered separately.
If a shop, or you try ordering a windshield from a past bronze or blue part number, it will show up as "available" because they have all been superceded to the green tint windshields.
Removing windshields from a junkyard svx is not at all difficult if you know what you're doing. I have removed 7 without an issue and also saving the seal.

These are the facts.

What does knowing what one is doing consist of? I haven't looked but does the fsm's describe a procedure? Or is there an explanation of what to do available?
I'd like to know if possible. Thanks.

Just common glass removal. I learned by googling how to do it to be honest. I have used piano/cut out wire and while it usually takes 2 people and takes some effort (less on a sunny day for obvious reasons), I have never had one crack when removing like has happened to others when using a "cold knife". Based on talking to some people experienced in auto glass as well as things i've noticed comparing to other cars, the SVX is one of the easiest windshields to pull.

What color windshield are you looking for?

Re: windshield source

I have found two places where I can get new aftermarket one's and a probable source for a good used molding / trim so with any luck mine will be replaced soon. I will update when it happens.

Subaru only has the green tint without titanium oxide coating. Last I knew, (about 2 months ago) they had around 20 left. You can get the bronze or blue tint from the chinese aftermarket but do not have the titanium oxide coating or the molding.

I'm assuming it would be possible to use the molding on the damaged one.
Is there a point of contact for the chinese aftermarket one?
Did you sell your blue one already?

I still have 2 blue windshields removed (couple more in current parts cars)
If the glass company is able to (aka willing and caring) save the molding, it can be reused. The windshields I pull, I am careful when I remove them and save the molding.

I have no idea how to get the chinese ones. I just know that they exist. I have seen over a handful in person. The fitment of the molding has never been very good on any that I've seen.

Edit: I realized I never messaged you back on facebook the other day. I got too busy. Give me a call Sunday if you like.
