Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W30 Used Oil Analysis

I did a UOA on the M1 5W30 High Mileage oil I had in the engine for just over 6000 miles. I also had the Bosch Premium oversized oil filter and the AC Delco air filter on the car. However, I changed the air filter just before putting this oil in so there may have been some contaminant in the engine from when it had the K&N air filter in it. A couple of things that jumped out at me was the high TBN which means the oil had plenty of life left in it. Hell, some oils START with that level. There was also no measurable water in the oil. Yeah, my headgasket really needs to be replaced...NOT! The oil sheared down from 11.7 to 10.5 which doesn't seem too bad and the wear metals were nice and low. Has anyone else ever posted a UOA from an SVX?

Re: Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W30 Used Oil Analysis

Hi everyone, I was recently at the Mobil 1 website and looked at the recommended oil for most protection in my 2011 Legacy 3.6L. Mobil recommended the 5w30 extended life Mobil 1. I think this would be a good choice for the SVX although in the 10w30 oil. I do not plan on running the oil 15,000 miles or 0ne year in the Legacy but I might in the SVX as I drive less than one thousand miles a year. Take care, BOBB

Re: Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W30 Used Oil Analysis

I'm registered at Mobil 1 also.

Based upon huskymaniac's suggestion and analysis, I am using Mobil 1 0-40 with the Lubeguard BioTech Protectant. My rebuilt longblock by AWD has less than 9,000 miles on it so a high-mileage oil is not needed.

I drive less the polo less than 600 miles a year now and sometimes it is 3 months between starts. I wanted protection against dry starts and a weight that would flow easily into tight clearances in cold weather.

A few things to note. First, 10W30 doesn't work for people who drive in winter in the north. Second, extended life oils are for people who plan to run their oils for 15k miles. I personally can't bring myself to do that. And you would still need to change the oil filter every 5000-7500 miles to be safe. My oil analysis shows that I can easily go longer than the 6100 miles I did. But I don't want to go longer than that on the filter and I might as well change the oil with the filter at 6k. I don't need an extended oil for that. If I drove in even more extreme conditions or drove my car harder I would move toward M1 0W40 or Rotella 5W40, although I have some concerns about Rotella. Finally, I like having some of the seal conditioners that you find in the high mileage oils.

How many miles are you going on the oil? Right now I am buying the 5 quart container of M1 5W30 HM and two quarts of the 0W40. The addition of the 0W40 brings the HTHS up very close to the threshold suggested by German manufacturers who are concerned about shear in high stress engines, still gives me some seal conditioners and flows well in winter temperatures. The 0W40 also helps increase the base number to enable longer OCIs but the straight 5W30 M1 HM seems to be good enough in that respect for my 6000 mile interval. I have to admit that this analysis has me tempted to push it higher though. I just don't know how long I want to keep that filter on there.

Re: Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W30 Used Oil Analysis

Hi Tony!
I have been doing 5k changes on the 92 Ebony, commuting 60 mi/day. On the other 2, it is a yearly ritual, about 3-4k on Silver, using M1 10W-30 HM, 1-1.5k on 97, using Valvoline 10W-30 dino oil.

Re: Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W30 Used Oil Analysis

at my first oil change my mechanic told me not to use anything synthetic and also not to go under 10w40....looks like I need a new mechanic as well as some synthetic oil
but again, your car is younger and has half the miles of mine so I'm not sure if 5w would work for me...

The comment on synthetic is odd for sure but every case is different and oils do change over time. M1 used to be on the thin side. For cars with tight bearing clearances being run in stressful conditions the oil would shear down and then it couldn't keep a protective film on the bearings. That is no longer the case. Also, M1's high mileage oils are a little thicker than their standard oils. The key parameter is HTHS. The Germans have specified a minimum of 3.5 for this. One caveat is if the passages are also tight. If you then go too thick you can have a problem. I decided to try to get to that 3.5 number but no higher, if possible.

M1 HM 10W30 has an HTHS of 3.5. If you live in a warmer area, this is probably the perfect oil for you. Valvoline Maxlife FULL synthetic is similar in that respect. For those of us that see low temperatures on a regular basis, we really need a 5W oil to make sure it flows at cold start. M1 HM 5W30 has an HTHS of 3.3. That's pretty good. And as I mentioned in the original post, the oil didn't shear down too much. I could probably just run with that from here on out. Or I can add a little M1 0W40 to boost the HTHS up to 3.5 AND get a better flowing oil at low temperature. I did that at the last oil change but I am now debating if it is necessary based on that UOA I posted.

If you drive in very high temperature conditions or drive the car very hard then maybe a 10W40 makes sense but, honestly, I think a 5W40 like Rotella (HTHS=4) would be a better option as 10W40s can be a bit thick at cold start and give you reduced gas mileage. And M1 0W40 (HTHS=3.8) might be an even better option. Redline 0W40 is probably the best option for such a case but it is very expensive.

Gordon,

On your daily commuter, you could probably do exactly what I am doing on my car. I know the Southern CT weather well and I know it doesn't get as cold as it does where I am. Still, a 5W in the winter would probably be beneficial. It also doesn't get any warmer there than it does where I am so a 30W is probably fine and especially a 30W HM oil. If warm weather driving still concerns you, you can add two quarts of M1 0W40 to 5 quarts of M1 5W30 to thicken it a little. And if you use an oversized oil filter you can probably go at least 6K on the oil. I was shocked at how much life my 5W30 M1 HM had left in it after 6K!

The cars that get driven less are a different situation. If either sits for an extended period, your main concern may be the wear that occurs when you start it after a long time sitting. For that, you either want an oil with a lot of Moly in it (Redline) or you want to add an oil protectant like the one sold by Lubegard. Moly forms a protective lubricating layer on parts which doesn't drain away with the oil. The oil esters in the Lubegard product do the same thing. If you add Lubegard, it also conditions seals so you don't need to add it to a HM oil. John is using M1 0W40 and adding Lubegard. That is a nice blend. The 0W40 is a beefy oil that might actually allow you to extend those annual oil changes and especially with the Lubegard added to it. I bet that 97 would return a great UOA after two years of your driving situation with the 0W40 plus Lubegard.

While we're on the subject of oil, which of the oversized oil filters did you decide was the best option? I need to order some, I have run out and it's time to change the oil pretty soon.

It's in my sig. If you do a search you should find a thread I started on oil filters with a link to a study on them. The study implied that the Bosch Premium filters are the same as the Purolator Pure One filters. So you basically get an oversized P1.
