sending unit
got my car towed to a shop to get the fuel issue fixed, the guy said they need to drop to tank to find the other leak and also check the sending unit, does the car have another separate unit aside from the fuel pump?

Re: sending unit
the sending unit typically refers to the float assembly for the gauge.

Re: sending unit
I'd look at the subaru parts website to get a visual understanding of the parts along with the price. The good news is they don't need to drop the tank to replace it. The "fuel level sending unit" and fuel pump are accessed through the top of the tank. There is an access pannel in the trunk right behind the seats. The fuel level sending unit is what sends the signal to your fuel gauge; if your fuel gauge works then that's not what they are talking about. Unless you've poked a hole in your tank somehow if you are smelling fuel from back there it is probably the short sections of hose on top of the tank connecting the hard lines to the "sending unit" which is the cap to the tank with hose barbs on it.

Re: sending unit
they may recommend that you replace it even if it is good (after all it's 20 years old) just to cover their butts. shops never want to be the last one to touch a part and then have it go bad so it's typical to replace it when it's taken out (which will save you in labor costs if you ever should need it because it's included in the fuel pump labor). that being said if they think you have to drop the tank they probably don't know much about subarus in general, you could probably do it yourself.

if he was gonna drop the tank i was just gonna order the new lines and replace everything there so i dont have to drop the tank again
