Satin Black Paint Completed

Well, I finally got around to finishing the project outlined here:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=45535

The last update there had the majority of the body painted, leaving the hood, front bumper, trunk lid, door handles, and mirrors to be re-painted after my failure of a 1st attempt. I also had alot of junk settle onto the sunroof after I sprayed it, so I wet sanded out the junk and re-clear coated.

I got the rest of the parts sprayed and I gotta say I'm happy with how it turned out...

I have a list of about 8 flaws that I've noticed, only 2 or 3 of which other people have noticed, so that's good. It'd be better if I had a list of 0 flaws though I guess it gives me something to aim for on my next paint job.

I'll set up some proper pictures some time after the holiday.

Re: Satin Black Paint Completed

Not bad.

Is the roof glossy? I might have been tempted to leave the top of the trunk lid, and the quarter window trims glossy black, just for a bit of direct contrast between glossy and matte.

Re: Satin Black Paint Completed

The paint looks very even and clean. Good job!

Were those "ripples" in the bottom area of the passenger side visible before? Sucks that imperfection is nearly impossible.

I still like your old rims best... if those were bronzed that would be very good looking. Oooo... or maybe RX-8 rims (my overall favs since a few years ago).

I still think you did a great job... while I initially wasn't too keen on the flat black paint... this turned out pretty decent looking. Did she really need a full repaint (I thought she looked to be one of the nicest out of the community since the early days)?

haha...ouch indeed!

I guess It's spray paint, technically, but not from a rattle can. It's full on basecoat/clearcoat automotive paint applied with a spray gun.

The ripples in the plastic were much more noticeable before, and I actually sanded them down a bit a the high points and filled in the low points a little bit. The body work actually turned out really good.

I'm with you on the Rims...I'm not 100% convinced these are the right wheels for the car. The width is a very nice fit, but the spokes are too thin, I think. The old rims recently became available again, so I may see how they look (they were being used on my buddy's RX-8, ironically )

She definitely needed a full re-spray. I was a clever photographer in the past, so she looked good in pics. The hood paint was all chipped and cracking beneath the clearcoat, the roof, and trunk were losing their clearcoat, there were tons of dings that needed filled (and were filled quite nicely!).

She could still benefit from a little further attention in the future...re-spray the sunroof (there's a reason none of these pics show the sunroof ), maybe re-spray the garnish under the rear windows...stuff like that.

Thanks for the compliments and recommendations. I will be adding a bit of detailing to break up the "flatness" a bit, but it won't be via a glossy roof. I'll post pics when I get that taken care of.

For now, I'm just glad to have the bulk of the project finished!

That looks great. the satin always shows off every little flaw. My next SVX will be dark satin blue/gloss black/top tinted windows(bronze rims of corse).

Hope you have ac for the summer. (or an sti).
That satin black gets HOT in the summer time. in tucson at least, and phoenix is even hotter.
ive had a couple buddies with satin black cars. id say you could fry an egg on it but that would be an understatement. You could cook pancakes, bacon and eggs on the hood. we put a thermometer on the hood one day, I think it was like 140+, and it was barely over 100 out. and thats about 1/2 inch off the paint. i could imagine when its 115 in the shade.

I think that's what is supposed to look like, flat black base/satin clear coat (no wd-40 necessary).

that would make a good base for some red pin-striping. 16 inch steelies and white walls.

It's actually not a black basecoat...more of a super dark gray with heavy metallic flake. The flatness is from the satin-clearcoat only.
