Rear bearing help needed

I am trying to press out the rear bearing outer race but it seems like the flat surface of the race is not accessible to press against. Only the tapered surface where the rollers ride on is visible. Is this where I should be pressing against? It just seems that it would expand the bearing and make it more difficult to extract the race. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

Re: Rear bearing help needed

Undo the lateral link bolt, undo the axle nut, swing the suspension out and remove the axle. Knock the hub out from the back side with a brass drift, the outer bearing will come out with it. You will need a press to press this off the hub. Now, remove the snap ring on the outer (wheel) side of the housing, and you should be able to drive the race and inner bearing out with a suitable drift. It's pressed in so it might be a bit of a pain in the butt... If you have access to a press, take the whole knuckle off, that will make it a lot easier. That's how we had to do them before we had the nice kit from Subaru.

Also, you will need a clamshell to get the inner bearing off the hub...

Re: Rear bearing help needed

Thanks, I am to the point of trying to press the outer race out. I am stumped by where to apply leverage to the race. It looks like the race is flush up against a back stop so there is nowhere to place the driving tool except inside the race where the rollers had been. Since that is a surface which is not at a 90 degree angle to the driving tool, it seems like it will expand the race as it is pushing it. Or am I missing something? The front of the race was held in by a snap ring which is now out. The back of it seems to be up against a lip, so I don't have a good surface to drive against.

I usually use the bearing itself, but if you have something that will fit inside the cup of the race, you can use that, it will just press out. The race is pretty thick, you aren't going to force it outwards enough to make it not come out.

Re: Rear bearing help needed

I used a round plate that was just a bit smaller than the race and pressed against the tapered section, and it did come out. Thanks a bunch to everyone who offered advice.
