separator cover leak
I've noticed a few people mention rear main seal leaks and the oil dripping on the head pipes creating smoke.I'm wondering if an oil separator leak would do the same thing. And also why is it called a separator if it just is an access cover. What does it separate?Might sound like a dumb ? but I'm curious.Any help anyone? I believe mine may be leaking as well as there is oil on the crossmember but is so slight it's hard to call it a leak.Maybe the beginning of a main seal leak

the seperator cover covers not only the piston pin access port but it also acts as a seperator for the PCV system. inside there is room for oil to get to the bottom while air escapes to the top

Do you have to pull the engine to replace it.

No, you can also pull the tranny to replace it, that's usually how we do it at work. Takes about 45 minutes if you have a lift and are good at it...

It is part of the PCV system. The positive crank case ventlation pulls blow by gas and oil out of the crank case. It keeps the crank case at low pressure (as long as your foots off the throttle) The baffel separates the oil vapor from the air and gas before pulling it back into the engine. The oil drips back down into the crank case. The ait and blow by gas then gets pulled into the intake manifold and burned. I think it's is a nice design for the separation process.
There is a metal replacement? That would be good. Take cae of that SVX, John

45 minutes to drop the tranny and replace the cover? That seems pretty quick to me.

When you have it up in the air, have a tranny jack, and air tools it's pretty easy. The only hard part is the %$*%*$& torque converter bolts, shoot it took me longer to get those out than it did to do the rest of the crap to get the tranny out! I've seen the Master Tech that I work next to do it pretty quickly, although now that I think about it, I think the one I saw him do in an hour was a manual, more like an hour and a half for an automatic.
Cuz if you think about it, to take the trans out, you drop the exhaust, drop the drive shaft, undo the linkage, take out the crossmember, undo the bellhousing bolts, and it's out, and on an automatic you have the cooler lines and torque converter bolts. Not really that hard if you have a lift, sucks doing it on your back though. (Been there, done that with a Ford Taurus.. NOT FUN)

Any idea what a dealer might get for doing it?I realize prices will be different around the country but assuming 75-85 bucks an hour what could I expect to pay ,worst case scenario?

Last one we did that I saw the RO, it was like $550, sucky thing is that's all labor, since the part is like $20. Probably a good idea to throw a rear main in there while you're at it, that'd be another $40ish.

Thanks to all. Do the head pipes and all 3 cats have to get dropped or just the front to provide clearance? I ask because I'm wondering what other parts I'll need.like exhaust gaskets, hangers, etc. I would like to have as many on hand so I don't need to have the dealer order them or the downtime.Any help?
