Stabiliser....

Just looking for for some confirmation, the stabiliser links on the front anti roll bar are worn on my svx, Subaru have given me a price of £84.40...EACH!!! for a part that would normally cost between £10 and £20. Threrfore, I have a sneeky suspicion the ones on my car are wrong and have been replaced with something 'near enough', could someone please have a look at there car and confirm the total length of the link....it is easy to get to, just put the steering on full lock...

How are things man?

John, I will have a look for you in the next couple of days. I recently had both of these replaced on my RVR, having asked the dealer to replace one and they were €90 each side plus vat plus fitting!

What you are saying about having a part on yours not exactly correct sounds odd. The length would need to be exact. The cup would need to be perfectly correct size.

However, I'll measure as best I can and get back to you on it.

Joe

Hi Joe,

Things are going ok, I've just finished my 90k service this weekend and so far I'm very pleased. I bought several service parts from accross the pond and they were identical to the OEM, my biggest fear was replacing the cam belt and the removal of the crankshaft nut....looked at everyone's advise and went with svxfiles, ( socket with extention bar and hitting it with a hammer) worked a treat!.
One other job on my winter list, was to skim my front discs, although new, they had developed a judder, but the engineers I use firstly advised me to swap the discs over from left to right so they were rotating the other way and see if that cures it......need I say smooth as a smooth thing.
Regards to the links, no rush Joe, as you know I'm probably the only owner of 4x4 that takes it off the road in winter....but it's sat there nice and fresh ready for the Spring

John

Re: Stabiliser....

Hi John,

Did you have any luck finding stabiliser links for reasonable money?

I desperately need one for my claret car to get it through the MOT.

Phil.

Hi Phil,
I've not replaced mine as yet, although worn they have no play in them, can't remember the exact length of them (about 235mm long) but there seems to be plenty for sale on ebay and the like, and I'm sure one could match something near, just means a bit of time checking. This will be my angle as I'm not parting with over £80 for one....please keep me posted with your results.

sorry I could not be of help,
John

Re: Stabiliser....

I see what you mean about ebay. It looks like ford, fiat and bmw all use very similar links. Maybe I'll take mine off and visit a breaker and see if they have anything close to the right size.

Re: Stabiliser....

I took the stabiliser link to a breakers yard to see if I could find anything similar, but the guy said that they cut the stabilisers off when they remove the struts. I guess undoing a couple of nuts is too much like hard work for them.

Then I called into my local SMB autoparts, just on the off chance. I didn't really expect that they would have anything suitable. The guy rumaged around for a while and then found a part which I'm sure will work.

It's the front stabiliser link for a Vauxhall Omega, 1994-2004 model. IIRC In the USA, it is known as a Cadillac Catera.

It is almost identical to the SVX part. The length is the same and it seems to be built thicker and stronger than the original SVX part. You could even call it an upgrade. The manufacturer is "First Line" and the part description is "FDL6363 FR STABILISER LINK VAUXHALL".

There are two small differences:

1) The SVX part is very slightly bent at the top end while the Vauxhall part is straight. As this is a ball joint, I can't see it causing a problem.

2) The Vauxhall part has larger bolts. so the mountings will need to be drilled out a couple of mm. I hope I have a drill bit hard enough to cut the antiroll bar.

The best part is the cost. Only £11 each. I guess it may be possible to get them even cheaper if you shop around.

I am going to do both sides together because I wouldn't want to have different parts on each side. Sure beats giving £200 to the Subaru dealer.

I'll post some photo's later, and again during the install so you can see what I'm talking about.

Here's a similar one on ebay.

Re: Stabiliser....

Excellent Phil!

I intend to replace the strut top mounts on mine as they are starting to knock/rattle anoyingly now although it passed the MoT, so the links will also be replaced as a matter of course.....look forward to your results

John

Re: Stabiliser....

A comparison of the old SVX links with the new vauxhall ones.

The SVX mounting holes are 10mm and they need drilling out to 12mm for the Vauxhall links. But the anti-roll bar is very hard to drill. Having spent 2 hours and ruined my 12mm bit, I'm now thinking of removing the antiroll bar and taking it to a machine shop to have it done properly on a pedestal drill.

Re: Stabiliser....

So were you able to machine it to a 12mm?? Thinking of replacing mine and looking for a good alternative.

Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe!
b3hla,
I read this thread this morning and bought some Moog #K6709 Catera
links this afternoon.
Drilling out the passenger side, one drill size at a time was a pain, SO I tapped it out to 12m X 1.5 to save some time and add some strength!
For the drivers side I removed the arm and put it in the drill press (untill Green Eyes yelled at me because its late....)
The ball joints appear stronger, even though the shafts are the same size.
Thank you for the find!
T.

Re: Stabiliser....

Cool.

I haven't had a chance to finish mine yet. I talked to a machine shop guy and he said the best way is to put a blow torch through the hole until the edges of the hole start to turn red then let it cool slowly without quenching. That will soften the steel around the hole. Then put some oil and drill really slowly with good sharp drill bit.

So that's what I'm planning to do. I bought a new titanium coated bit for the job. Hopefully I'll find the time either tonight or friday.

Just out of curiousity, what do the Catera parts cost in the US compared to the SVX parts?

Subaru list price is $60.68, so I can buy them at the local Subaru dealer for $45.55 each.
From Advance Auto Parts they cost $32.68 each.
I would not do this to save money!
It took me three hours with a lift and a shop size drill press.
I am hoping these are stronger than stock.
