Suby Newby problem....

Hello all, first post here!

This is my first SVX (love it!). Picked it up in Milwaukee, WI last Tuesday and drove it down to St. Louis without a hitch (purred like a kitten all the way..27 mpg [yes!]). Been driving it for about a week with no problems. Left work yesterday, started fine, but as it warmed up the idle started going berzerk! Had a helluva time keeping it going to get home. I did notice a pretty descent tranny fluid leak originating somewhere forward of the cross-member (tranny cooler hoses?), but haven't had a chance to jack her up to confirm. I did notice that the tranny fluid completely soaked both O2 sensors and most of the exhaust....smelled real good [not]. My question is could the tranny fluid somehow effect the O2 sensors (apparently original equip)? I don't have a way of checking codes at the moment, but hopefully this weekend if the weather isn't too bad I'll tear into her.

Thanks ahead of time for any assistance/input.

Kevin

Check engine light on? If so you can go to Earthworm's SVX info site (its in his sig if you see one of his posts). That'll tell ya if its an 02 sensor. I'm thinking more along the lines of an air leak in your idle control valve, maybe your maf or something along those lines if you don't have a check engine light telling you something else.

As for the tranny you have hoses on the drivers side by the starter that run from the hard tranny lines to hard lines running the length of the motor and then to soft lines going into the radiator.

Don't forget the tranny can be an issue on the SVX so change that fluid often and more often plus a tranny cooler and temp gauge are a must! Less than $250 installed by a good shop.

The codes can be found in the How-To Documents found in the upper right hand corner of this page.

If these other things can not fix it, it could be your power steering. It does not use PS fluid, but Tranny fluid. There is an O-Ring that leaks and that could be your problem too. If it is moist around the tank, and it is low, there is a How-To on that too. It is very simple and you can do it in less than 30 minutes. Good luck.

Oooops! Yeah, the "Check Engine" light came on about 3 times during the trip home.

I'll check out Earthworms, and the -iw site to see what I can get out of them. My service manual hasn't got here yet, so I'm stuck with a POS Haynes manual (almost completely usless........doesn't mention "check engine" anywhere in the manual).

Thanks again for the quick replies! I'll get back with you guys as soon as I know something more about what's up.

Are you kidding me?!? I can check codes on this car by simple connecting a couple of wires in the kick panel?

I'll be checking this out after work tomorrow for sure!

This site ROCKS!!

First of all, I'd like to thank the posters that turned me on to a virtual cornucopia (sp?) of valuable information. Beer's on me if you make it up to my neck of the woods!!

Did the code check ala Earthworms site, got three codes which point to both O2 sensors, and an air-flow sensor. Got my pdf. Service Manual in the mail today, time to do some readin'!

P.S. - I know this is kinda "off-topic", and I'm not sure how the admins feel about it (delete/move if you feel it belongs somewhere else), but my original reason for buying an SVX was to measure up the engine for a transplant to one of my Porsche 914's (which would be a wicked little machine with one of these flat-6 beasts in it ...don't throw rocks yet! ) After driving my SVX from Milwaukee to St. Louis I absolutely fell in love with it's comfort and styling......this particular engine is staying right where it is! I'm still going to stuff one in the Porsche, but this SVX "will" be staying on the road....gettin' "what the hell is that" looks from everyone.

Glad to hear that you fell in love and will be keeping this one intact

Unfortunately there are plenty that get crashed beyond repair that you can get a project engine from.

As far as your problems go, work on replacing the MAF first, that is more likely to cause the symptoms you described.

PS. There has already been someone on this board that put an EG33 in a 914, do a search and you can come up with the info. I don't remember if it was ever completed????

I know the xt6 engine makes a nice addition to the 914 from what I've heard it actually makes it almost exactly the same as a 916 in terms of weight, acceleration, etc plus you get subie reliability with a basic wiring set up as opposed to the SVX computer. Sure it wouldn't be as fast but all and all probably a better driver.

I agree with Hocrest though about the MAF. Might wanna see if you can find another local owner willing to lend ya one to plug and play or try cleaning it before buying one either new or used. If nobody is selling here check out www.car-part.com

Good to see another St Louis area member. If you need help on the MAF issue, or even rear wheel bearings. Let me know

Did the O2's (froze my a** off!), still runs like crap . Pearlm30, got a good MAF laying around for diagnostic purposes? I'm still getting the MAF code, along with the knock sensor now.

I got a real good look at the underside, and it appears that the tranny was replaced at one time, which is a good thing I'm guessing. Still has the stock tranny cooler set-up. All of my leakage is coming from the hose clamp connections on the steering (which I believe someone mentioned earlier), the main leaks were above the rack/pinion assy., what a bear to get at!! When better weather comes to this part of the country, they're 'all' getting replaced.....half tempted to do a AN-fitting/steel braided hose job on them.

Thanks for the offer pearlm30, my name's Kevin, and my #'s (636) 257-6966 if you get a chance to read this, I could definitely use an assist.

the MAF is a common problem your actually lucky enough to get a code... you can replace it OR check out the how to docs on this site last i remember some one added a how to on rebuilding them

oh and replace both the knock sensors
sorry you SVX is giving you so much trouble at once they are usually pretty reliable
