Front wheel bearing
I took my car back in May to get some service...Dealership told me front wheel bearing should be replaced. I didn't do it at the time, but I can feel some vibration in the pedal and steering wheel and some noticeable more pronounced vibration noise kind of coming from my right front...I am now thinking it's the bearing.
Anyone have the part number(s) of the parts I need to fix this? I think I would need a new axle nut and bearing, but extra parts to consider?? And also what grease should I use to repack the bearing? Thanks |

Make sure it's not the balance or an uneven tire or a bent rim before replacing the bearing.

A bearing wont vibrate but it will growl.

Really? See I cannot really tell....The tires make their normal road noise, but they are newer tires (less than 2k) and the rims were checked for roundness and everything balanced. Ball joint was replaced recently. I just want to have the right parts ready to replace the bearing when it's time.

I used synthetic bearing grease. Mobile one or Castrol are good.

i think the bearing makes more of a 'whorl' noise when its going.

But can you feel it in the way the car drives? Does it still steer smoothly or does everything feel bumpy, etc.? So far I have no problems driving.....maybe it isn't the bearing after all...I dunno.

You can rarely diagnose a bad wheel bearing just by driving the car, there are so many other things that can cause noises, vibrations, shimmying, etc. etc. Though a banshee wail is pretty much a giveaway!
Why not do what I presume they did at the dealership? Jack the car up, put an additional jackstand underneath too, because your hands are going to be at risk at the next stage. Grasp the tyre at the very top and very bottom and try and rock the wheel by alternately pushing/pulling at the top and pulling/pushing at the bottom. Then try and push and pull the entire wheel inwards and outwards too - be as violent with it as you dare. The slightest perceptible movement is a pretty good indication that the bearing needs to be replaced. More information here http://www.timken.com/industries/aut...%20Bearing.pdf |
