Wink Gas for $10 a tank!

Anybody here live in Baltimore?

June 2, 2006
Gas at $10 a tankful proves to be a fuelish notion
By AP

BALTIMORE -- A man pretended to be a station attendant and "sold" gasoline to drivers for $10 a tank, then pocketed the money, police said.

Joseph Boulware, 41, was arrested May 19 at a gas station in West Baltimore where, police said, he dispensed 1,700 litres of gas worth about $1,300 US.

Authorities said Boulware used a magnetic key and a code that effectively places a pump on standby mode, allowing him to dispense gasoline unnoticed.

Boulware had worked for gas testing companies, which is how police believe he obtained the key and code.

"He asks you, 'You want gas? I will fill you up for $10,"' said Mohammad Mehtabdin, manager of the Citgo station where Boulware was arrested.

"He was going pump to pump. He was selling gas to the people. So our employees noticed. We asked him, 'What are you doing here?' He said, 'Nothing, nothing."'

Boulware was charged with theft, assault and possession of crack cocaine.

Police say they are investigating other gas-pilfering schemes at as many as eight other stations. "He had a lot of customers," one Citgo employee said.

Not one of the customers thought it was odd that a crack addict was offering gas for $10? Probably could have talked him down to $5.

The people who bought the gas are just as guilty of theft as the guy selling it. Assuming each person put in around 15 gallons, then the guy filled up 30 tanks. Not one of those people told the gas station owner he was being robbed.

Correct. Knowingly accepting stolen property is a crime. They should track down and prosacute them.

Sorry Ken, I meant prosecute, but I was in a hurry. I didn't think it looked right.

As for the next post, do we really have to go over this again.....?

Are you kidding. I'd take 10$ gasoline any day of the week. There have been cases where a pump is accidentally set at the wrong value for a specific grade, and I'd go there too.

Sorry, I wouldn't even feel bad either.

And proving that someone knew it was stolen would be very hard. Especially because anyone who had access to make a gas pump run without charge COULD be accepted as an employee or owner of the gas station.

Am I going to "pump and run" hell no... but am I going to take advantage of an opportunity where someone else screwed up/is accepting the risk of arrest to get gas at a decent price? Why not.

Someone who goes to a gas station and pumps thier own gas and is inadvertantly given a lower amount, could claim ignorance. Having someone say, hey I'll fill up your tank for $10 is a little harder to say you didn't know better.

How about I sell you one of Earl's SVXi for $800. I'm sure he'd have a problem with it.
