I killed my laptop

I just killed my laptop. Long story. My complete stupidity. No point in really fixing it. It'll cost close to a new one. Now the question is the replacement question. What do you all think?

What do you think about Averatec?

I had two of them: it's not reliable in my cases. I had two 3000 series(12.1") model and both are AMD processor. The first one broke down right after warranty. The second one stopped working (harddrive problem) after 3 months I purchased. Now I have to waste my time to ship back to the factory....

Lwin, what brands do you think is more reliable? I probably don't give averatec a chance for my next one...

Did I miss something? What's wrong with Dell or Panasonic? I'm not super into computers so maybe those other two are better. I have a Gateway desktop and used to have a Compaq. My in-laws have had a few Dell's to great effect. They are happy with them.

Do not get a Dell! (With the exception of maybe the new XPS line) I'd say about 75% of my friends have Dell laptops, and just about EVERY one of them has had overheating issues. There's been a fair amount of hard drive failures thrown in there as well, probably due to the overheating. Their desktops are just fine, but their laptops are junk.

From the PC line, the only laptop I'd trust would be IBMs. I've had luck with the 1000 and 4300 series from Averatec. The older 5400 and 3200 sucks. I even had a 6200 series once. I don't like the AMDs as much as centrino based laptops. I like the chip in the OQO. I have the same processor in the Car PC. Not a powerful one but only 1ghz processor that I know of that will not need a fan.

I like the intel based apple solution. worst case, it's an amazing dual processor unix box or you can also run microsoft winblows too.

I would go for either Toshiba or IBM.
And for a good laptop at a cheap price, I highly recommend Fujitsu-Siemens.
You woudl probably laugh at me, but I was doing a research not long ago, I wanted to buy one before my accident, and it turned out that each person owning a Fujitsu was very content with all its specs and performance... But it's your money, you would have to decide...

Averatec is crap. Mine and my sister's both crapped out.

But hey if you give them your money maybe they will start using better components.

No reason not to get the Apple unless you are an on the go gamer.

Computer stupidity story:

I get sent to troubleshoot some ladies iMac.

Her keyboard doesn't work.

I check it out.

Soda all over the keyboard.

I take it away and flush it with water.

She reports back to my headman, saying it was my fault.

I had a few averatecs. All the silver ones (older models are crap) I know. I fixed them and supported a few.

All the newer ones are ok. As in white ones. I had a 1050 and now 4265 that I killed. I am eyeing the 4265 or the 2150. I don't really see the need to spend $2500 for the macpro since most likely, I should be able to run OSX on the laptop soon anyways. I can do it on my PC... so...

I don't own a lap top, but my son swears by his Mac. He's had it a year now and absolutely no problems at all.
