The Subaru WRX Sti with its factory 300 hp engine, better warranty, longer maintaince schedule, the ability to race under warranty [Mitsubishi does not approve of racing under warranty] is extremely competitive to the EVO but I really don't care for its looks. The 2007 model Sti will be much better looking in my opinion, even better looking than the 2007 MK X EVO when it arrives; which is going to look like a Neon on steroids. Not to mention the fact, Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler are developing a new generation of engines together. One of which will most likely replace the legendary 4G63 in the MK X EVO. As seen below.

Nor does Subaru, GM, Ford, Chrylser, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia or any other manufacturer to my knowledge. They all put in there a nice clause telling you that the car is not a race vehicle and mis-use can lead to voiding of the warranty. It has just been claimed that Mitsu has actually gone looking for individuals who have abused their vehicles by racing rather than going by the evidence when it comes back in. Personally, I applode them for this. Just think if Subaru did it then the cost of ownership would go down b/c of less warranty claims paid out for idiots who think that awd cars make great drag cars.

I understand your concerns about buying an SVX, but I must say I'm surprised you're going with an Evo instead...

If awd is important to you, what do you think of the 3000GT VR4s? Twin-turbo power, sleek styling like the SVX, and more 'adult' looking than the Evo.

-Chike

P.S. Btw, the Evo handles better due to its solid suspension and sticky rubber - but don't under estimate how well a 'sorted' SVX can handle the twisties. 0.97 lateral g's on a skidpad isn't an impossibility for an SVX with a few suspension tweaks on summer tires!

I love rally cars. My first car was a 1968 Opel Kadett Rallye I bought new from a local Buick Dealer. Remember those cars? It was basically an Opel Kadette with two extra fog lights, rally gauge package and large black stripes on the hood for an extra 500 dollars. It threw a rod at 700 miles.Gee, I wonder why? My next car was a 1970 Boss 429 Mustang I bought used in 1971 from the money I saved in Vietnam. I was drafted in September of 1968 and signed up for another year of service to go warrant officer school to fly medical evac UH-1's. Which I did for the 101st out of Camp Eagle in Phu-Bai and Firebase Howard near Hue. The black Boss served me well while I was in college until the gas crisis of 1973 when I sold it for a Celica. I now own a 2003 GS 300,1967 Shelby GT 350, and a 2001 IS 300. Which my son drives more than I do. I've even owned a few LandCruisers both FJ-40 and FJ-45. But the EVO is something special to me. But I refuse to pay 35k for a new one...

I think you just wanted a car with a number in the name.

An SVX can be just as fast and enjoyable as an EVO. Evo's run somewhere in the 13's out of the box and bounce all over the roads during daily driving. It would take a little money to do that to an SVX you bought for 5k. Just drop the koni/gc setup in for prob around 1k. And the stage 2 or 3 ecutune. Stage 2 will give you a big 165hp boost of nitrous for racing or the stage 3 can give you around 360hp for all day usage. Not to mention what a 5mt or 6mt can do for fun. I dispise EVO's and STi's as they are super high performance out of the box. I'd rather see my SVX run high 14's than buy an out of the box 13 sec car. I'm sorry, the effort means everything to a guy like me. Not to mention that the SVX is sssssoooooooooo much more enjoyable than an STi or an EVO for driving on the streets, the only thing they got on us is speed

Yea that's Great! And many day's in mid July do you think the factory transmission would last pulling 360 hp? Especially one without a good aftermarket cooler?..

While I have never driven an EVO, I am somewhat biased on my outlook. Subarus are one of the most reliable cars ever. My dad's 93 legacy(same year as my svx) has 234,000 miles on it and is still running strong. These cars pay for themselves. Sure the SVX is known for it's tranny problems, but that can be easily prevented with an aftermarket 100$ transmission cooler and using the 3rd gear in urban driving. It's hard to believe that these cars can be had in good condition for under $5000 and at one time retailed for $35,000. It's a cruiser, not a racecar. And if you enjoy driving "unsafely" and have a deathwish, maybe you shouldn't buy an all wheel drive car. So you consider a car like the EVO, so commonplace, maybe not for your age group, slightly faster and looks like a computerized piece of plastic(biased ). The svx is a cult car, and you get a certain amount of pride when you buy one and realize it looks like a japanese ferrarri. The heads it turns and the way it hugs the road and the way it just wants to cruise at 80 is what makes it all worth it. But if you don't want to be different, no one will stop you.
