Sorry to take so long to respond. I just now saw this thread, again.

The night I did the wright up, I had adjusted the band, at least three times, the picturs of the combination wrench was early in the night, before I bought a selection of Sears wrenches to finally find the right one.
If you were looking strait down from above the band adjustment nut, the long box wrench points almost strait forward.
It must go under the hoses and wiring looms, and when pulled, just above the starter. If you can pull the heater hose out of the way and hold it with a "zip tie" that will help. Tom.

Thanks Tom,

If you read all my posts you will see it worked. I used a series of different wrenches. We have a Harbor Freight store in Norristown, PA. It is near work, so I took a lunchtime run and got a set of cheap offset box end metric wrenches for $12. They worked. I also bought a set of racheting metric box end wrenches there for another $12.
This store is really dangerous if you have money in your pocket.

Wow!

No matter how many times you adjust the band, it's still a PITA!

There are 3 of us at work right now and we are talking about making a "lunchtime run" to Harbor Freight next week.

On another topic, last night I got the exhaust parts needed to fix SVXY's system. Looks like I'll be at Midas early tomrrow morning.
After that I have to fix 2 toilets in the house.

Misc. Ramblings SVXY needs help

Friday, I had the tranny flushed to see if it would help. I had it flushed last around Thanksgiving, which was 3 months ago. The color of the old ATF was like a dark Welches Grape Juice. It supposed to look like Cranapple Juice. Both the old and new ATF were synthetic.

We changed the ATF filter and drained the old filter on a white surface. There were definite black spots and a couple of black flakes in the old ATF. The service tech (good SVX mechanic) said that the tranny is dead and I should either rebuild or put in a Subaru reman. tranny. Rafferty Subaru wants $3300 for a reman. That price includes the core exchange rebate. I drove home slowly.

Saturday, I had the exhaustwork done at Midas. They did a good job and that problem is fixed.
Saturday, I also did the transmission brake band adjustment to see if the combination of the flush and adjustment would restore 4th gear.

Sunday morning early, I drove the car at speed to see if the tranny had resurrected itself. After all, it was Easter Sunday. Alas, the flush and adjustment did not work. Fourth gear is still dead.

As I said before, the cost to set SVXY right is about $4-5k. I am leaning toward restoring this SVX. Now it's a mater of justifying the money, and I think I figured out a way to do it (legally) last night. For now, I can use SVXY sparingly, only around town (slower speeds), untill I build up enough $ to fix him. This is going to come down to "heart vs. head."

I'll keep posting when the next chapter in this saga is completed.

Larry, maybe it's time to join the Gear Traders club? I'll have Nick's 4.44 at Reading, take it for a ride before you decide. Tom.

Larry I think Tom is telling you to go with 4.11 or 4.44 gears instead of the regular SVX tranny.

Yes, Larry, if your transmission is on the way out, rather than spend an outrageous amount on a stock replacement I thought you might consider a more fiscally reasonable alternative.

You can buy a used Legacy outback transmission, and matching differential to install in your car for far less than what a Subaru garage would charge.

And have more performance to boot. Tom.

bruce
You have SVXi coming to your back deck every night?! Cool...

This is a point of information post, just to set the record straight.
First, we only have 3 SVXes and 5 cats. (I think Earl has more SVXes and no cats since he has fish).
Second, we are now both leaning toward fixing up SVXY (Type of tranny & reman. vs. rebuild still undecided).
Third, I think the decision to fix up SVXY is going to cost me a complete kitchen remodel ("But Rosie they now have Formica countertops that look exactly like granite and no one will ever know the difference!!").

Yeah no one will know (cept' Rosie)

If it were me Larry, I'd either go with a 5spd or an Outback tranny (least until someone figures out how to put an 05' legacy sport shift in an SVX on the cheap.....LOL)
