Up Down rev on start

Once I start my svx it revs up to ~1800rpm then it drops quickly to ~500rpm, then revs back up, then back down then back up and stays.
Also has a gas smell after start up but quickly goes away, Once the car is running runs fine.

Not sure but I think mine does that too......but I never paid too much attention to it as a problem.
Anyone think there is a problem and why this happens??


Also my 90 legacy started up really funny when the engine was warm....It would start and the tach would bounce and try to stall unless I gave it gas right when I started it....I would watch the needle bounce from 1000 to almost zero and up and down till it found the idle.........VERY WEIRD.......anybody ever seen this????

It happens to mine too minus the bad gas odor. I think it happens to every SVX.

I think this is the "exhaust" smell I notice when I start mine up...it's very strong.....but I smell minor fumes in the cabin....I think I'm the 'Lucky' winner here......lol........I get high for free!!

Actually there are times i do get a minor smell in the cabin too....usually when im in the garage though.

Well if it runs OK when its warmed up, I'd go for the Idle air control valve, under the throttle body. This may be gooed up and slow to react, to the signals from the ECU, when it is cold.

You have just had the trans replaced, so I would check all the air hoses around the air inlet, for leaks, and the wiring plugs, to ensure they are tight.

Listen to my wife? She thinks I don't.

While it does cost me, I find "Yes Dear" makes her go away, while "No Dear" means she will stay - and then I do have to listen to her.

And believe it or not, she who has never ridden on a motorbike in her life, says Nort has to stay in the family. She's a good woman (but I try not to let on).
