What brand of air filter do you use?

What the title asks: What brand of air filter do you use? Please specify the type, as well.

I keep hearing all these negative things about the filtering abilities of K&N (and keep reading about all of these scientific tests that prove they're too sucky, in a dirty way), and I think I've decided that the life of my engine is slightly more important than 3 horsepower.

What's the consensus?

I was thinking of the K&N E-0940. has tremedous cāpabilities for air sucking (660 ci) great for future power enhancements on the SVX... but after the comments and study on another thread... I am having second thoughts..

I use an STI filter, but previously used a K&N with no problems.

I use the OEM filter. It's frame is metal on the ends and very sturdy unlike that cheap foam frame the Fram filter has, and it has a light coating of oil on it for extra dirt trapping capabilities.

Does anyone know who makes it?

we still didn't get the bottom of it... so WHICH HAS both the highest and the cleanest air flow ?
the one i posted before the K&N E-0940 has a very high air flow but is the cleanest? (you will tell me that having the highest air flow will lead to high dirt level getting to the intake... is it the case?)

Having high air flow (CFM/sq. in.) is different than having high surface area through which to flow air. It helps a lot if you think of air as a thin liquid, instead of this invisible, magical thing that you can't see but know is there.

What would flow more air into a large room: A screen door designed for a midget (2x4 feet, let's say), or a screen door designed for the average male (maybe 3x6.5 feet)? The answer should be obvious, since one is more than twice the area of the other. Now, take that 3x6.5 foot sheet of screen, and fold it and wrinkle it until it fits into the 2x4 foot frame. Technically, it should still flow the same amount as when laid flat.

This isn't 100% true, because the wrinkles in something like an air filter create pressure changes and waves/pulsations in air flow, but for the most part it is true. Comparing the K&N cone filter to something like the stock flat panel is like comparing apples and oranges. The K&N flows more CFM/sq. in., but it is also larger in surface area. This makes it difficult to measure exactly what is effecting flow the most: The size of the filter, or the size of the holes that allow air to flow?

Technically, if you were to keep the filtering capabilities and flow rate of the stock filter, but increase it's surface area (perhaps by making it a cone shape), you would both keep your engine clean and supply it with more air.

So, perhaps my real question is: What filters filter the best, but still have a large enough surface area to be effectively considered an "upgrade"?

I'm a strong believer in the Genuine Subaru filters. I've always used them in all of my subarus, but I have a K&N in my SVX right now since that's what the previous owner installed. I plan on replacing it with a Genuine Subaru filter soon.
