You should be able to just get away with painting it.

When my car was rear-ended It was enough to spider the paint on mine and crack the bumper on the other car. All they did was re-paint my bumper (albeit poorly).

Screw the replacement. Bring it down to my work and I'll have one of the touchup guys redo the whole bumper for around 40 bucks.

Whats your deductable? The check may take into account your deductable.
If originaly the insurance adjuster told you that you would get $956 for the damages then what ever you do DON'T CASH THAT CHECK! If you cash the check, you have just agreed that all the insurance company owes you is $762.82. You need to call them and find out how they came to that price, and then argue it. In the long run you may still only get the 762, but if you don't argue it, you won't get anything more for sure.

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT... are you paying $1000 just to paint this thing? or it is the bumper cover and paintjob? if only painting it for $1000, send it to me by UPS ($180) i will paint it for you for $75 (professionally) and send it back to you by UPS ($180) the whole thing would cost you around $450. that's a $500 savings...
