intersting find...

so, it's been almost a year since i lost 3rd and 4th gear in my svx and i finally got the nerve to drop the tranny pan (maybe i could find some damage). to my suprise, the visible area of the transmission was spotless and in it's place... except for one 2" long bolt just relaxing in the bottom of the pan. there are no scars or marks on the bolt that would say it went through any gears, etc. (in excellent condition). so, since i'm sure that this isn't a normal thing, has anyone else found anything like this in their transmission journeys and any ideas as to where it may have come from?

Well, that is weird. My guess is that it came from the underside of the valve body - one of the bolts that holds on the filter or a pipe or something. I don't think it could have come from anywhere else. And, at any rate, it probably wan't hurting anything by being there - especially if it found its way to the magnet...and I bet it did.

yes, it found it's way to the magnet (apparently without cycling through the rest of the tranny). upon inspection, it's not from the valve body or anything else visible from under the car. i'm currently in the process of dropping the tranny to tear it apart and hopefully find why i lost 3rd and 4th gear (maybe i'll find the home for this bolt as well).my findings when i get into the tranny will be the determining factor as to when i do a mt swap.

Do you have a factorty service manual set to perform the proper autopsy, or are you just taking it apart hoping to find serious damage to something? Because I expect that you'll take it apart and say, 'hey, nothing's broken. I figure you just wore out some clutches.

Mystery solved. svxfiles lost a bolt and you've found it.

Good luck on your repair.

very funny R,,,,,

Actually the reason for the question was, there are 4 gold bolts holding the filter on, and 2 black bolts holding a crossover tube. Since they are black, and as you are looking up a an oil dripping maze of wires and hi-teck gizmos, ( yes that IS the correct Subaru term) it would be easy to miss it. Been there Tom.

the bolt is a 10mm gold bolt. i removed the filter and all of the bolt holes for it were filled. i have a service manual on its way via ups this week so by the time i get the tranny out, i'll have a book to guide me. the fluid was clean and didn't smell burnt and the car is very smooth shifting into gear and between 1st and 2nd. don't know if any of this is helpful, but i have to show my accountant (wife) that there is no hope in order to plan for a new 6-spd.

ok, so now i'm getting the fever. i've decided to pull the engine as well as the transmission. while i have the engine removed, i'll be replacing the head gaskets (probly heads, too), timing, and thorughly cleaning the engine from top to bottom. so, now the question is: has anyone ported/polished their heads yet?
