Fully Synthetic Transmission Fluid

Prior to buying my car, the previous owner had its gearbox rebuilt and filled with fully synthetic fluid. I now want to buy some to keep on the shelf but can't find any in any of my local shops. Halfords are typically useless and my local motor factors have never even heard of fully synthetic fluid. The have looked in their catalogues and can only find fully synthetic engine oil.

Please can someone tell me who makes this fluid and where I might buy some?

Thanks.

Hi Mozta, the best one is probably RedLine HighTemp ATF (see www.redlineoil.com). As for me you can pick up Mobil 1 SHC (in states they have Mobil1 Sythetic ATF but not selling it in Europe).
Hope It will help. Peter

Thanks guys, I'll check out both sites and order myself some. I'll show the man in my local motor factor too.....he denies it exists.

I rang the transmission specialists that rebuilt my gearbox last year when the previous owner was having problems with it. They remember doing the job but can't remember exactly what synthetic AT fluid they put in it. All they do know is that it's the same fluid British Subaru dealers use. Any ideas as to what fluid that is?

Hi Monzta, I did big research at ATF field (see my thread ATF from September). Generaly I think you can mix fluids which meets the same characteristic. On my Mobile1 SHC there is some notice that it can be mixed with ... folows characteristics...
On your place I would pick up good brand (RedLine or Mobile) and check with manaufacturer (as I remeber RedLine has no mention about mixing with other brands and Mobile has it on their web sites)
Problem is that whan you change it there still remain 1/2 or min. 1/3 of previous ATF. So be careful.
I was so afraid from my choice and I even all consulted with local Mobile/Exxon product managers :-)) But I had no problems with mixing because tranny was burnt out and had to be took apart to pieces :-)
Make your private investigation, for me very important point was Boilng point, where wins Mobile1 synthetic ATF (unfortunately not sold in Europe - damn Mobile/Exxon business policy) but in other characterictics wins RedLine High Temp ATF.
Subaru Czech Republic use Castrol products and were not able to recomend me any synthetic product...

Monzta,

Your best bet to easily get fully synth is go to the nearest BMW main dealer. They have similar automatics to our SVXs, and recommend fully synth, so they will have it in stock. It will exceed the spec that Subaru require for our tranny.

In reading about tranny trouble over the years, most are agreed the best oil is the Redline HighTemp ATF, which is fully synthetic, but pretty expensive.

Hi Joe, as for BMW it seems they use different brands in different countries. As my friend from states recomend me the same (in states they use Mobil1 synthetic ATF), I have checked it with local dealer and in Czech Rep. they use Castrol as well as Subaru Czech (personaly I do not like this brand :-)))

I've managed to get two litres of Redline synth ATF from Demon Tweeks. I'm just waiting for it to arrive now.

Are you only topping up?

I thought they only sold it in US quarts, but maybe they changed recently.

Joe
