What's With Canada, eh?

I've been looking around for months for ANY SVX anywhere near me here in Saskatchewan. Nothing at all available in my province, but there are still SOME I've found scattered across parts of Canada. The problem is, places like this: http://autos.canada.com/national/buy....aspx?id=24497

Almost $30,000 !!?? Seems to be the norm up here to charge about 3-4 times the sale values that I see in US Newspaper Classifieds and here on the forums (even after US -> CA exchange). I know this has come up before. Digging through past threads it seems theres a few people who've caught onto this and have either SOLD their car up here or WOULD sell it here if (god forbid) they ever decided to part with it.

Now, not all dealerships or individuals ask 30k for their SVXs, this is a bit of a ridiculous example. But they still ask a LOT even when the car hasnt had the "usual" (read: utterly necessary) maintenance taken care of. I swear, when I get my SVX I'll have to come buy one off a forum member from the States, where 4-5k US can get you a decent ride.
(Enter: "LOL 4k US is 30k Canadian" comments.)
Also: Looks like someone will be buying my 89 Integra off me soon, so those dollars will be put toward my SVX Fund. Hrm, only $26,000 to go

You're not kidding - that price is insane. Is the 'mileage' really in kilometers? If so, why don't they call it something else?

I'm not making fun, I'm really curious.

Anyway, I hope you do find one in good shape and that you don't have to go too far to get it. But Maybe a trip to the States would be worth avoiding $30k. Ow...on a seven year old car...

Definitely look at going to the US to buy one. The prices up in Canada are insane. The exchange rate is actually getting much better and you can find some great deals. It is actually fairly easy to import an SVX into Canada, if you have any questions PM me. Try to have a forum member check out a car for you if you are really interested in a certain one.

Dza, I'll sell you mine and take $10K off that original sticker price! I will even consider 15K.

heh, thanks JLittell but I'll have to pass.
Tom: Thanks for the link. Thats the site where I have been watching the closest. Its tough to justify a trip to check out a car 1-2 provinces away based on a brief ad, and when I don't really know how to closely inspect it myself.

When the # does come together and it's time to buy, maybe I'll beg for some forum love and have a person who is in-the-know check out a car in the states for me. That would just leave Picking It Up as the hard part.
Northernkanuck, I sent you a PM regarding taxes/duties/border junk. If anyone else can help me out with the possible fees associated with bringing a car back to Canada, that would be appreciated. (I'll go searching for threads too.)

Thanks
-Dan

this is disappointing news for me, too. i was hoping for my next svx purchase to be CDM, 'cause i desperately want factory heated seats.

Now we know why CDM models cost so much. Heated seats! They are worth a couple of grand extra, right?

DZA. Hey, nice to hear someone other than myself freak out about the SVX $ situation here. I'm located in Edmonton and have looked at the red '96. It appears to be a legitimate very good (but not THAT great) example with a local history. At one point, I'd even thought about trading it for my Polo Green '96, just because I like the red, but the current asking of $26,000 is mental if not boardering on insane (don't forget to add the 7% tax). Weber Motors occasionally gets SVX's and they always overprice them. Sorry, WAY overprice them. In June, 2000, I almost purchased a black '96 with 66,000 kms from them. Asking $ was $29,800 and they would not accept $24,800 following a thorough inspection. By the way, they have been trying to sell the red car for a long time - over a year - at least. When I purchased my Boxster this year, I even used that car as a basis for a trade in. Our local Porsche dealer would have given me about $16,000 for my 84,000 Km '96 which is is great shape. Since I don't have any pressing monetary issues, I decided to keep the SVX for my "winter beater" (Hey USA guys, this isn't as bad as it sounds. Less snow and salt up here than in many US or Eastern Cdn cities, and I've got the heated seats, and there are uglier ways to go skiing).
Anyway, there have been a few fairly good examples in the $ mid teens kicking around Edmonton, but they are usually high kms and have the usual issues or are accident victims. Do what I did. Look thoroughly at all of Canada on Canada trader.com. Take you time. Find the right car. Don't waste your time with the Edmonton Soobie dealers, but Subaru of Calgary has been a good source of quality SVX's, albeit on rare occasions. Oh, another word of advice. You think CDN $ values are crazy, go price out some parts at a dealer. Then start drinking heavily. Then try your "friendly" insurance agent for a quote. Oh fun. Honestly, my Boxster may end up costing me less in the long run! Who said it's cheap to be different? Regards.

Buddy of mine used to work at Centaur Suby on Mcleod in Calgary. They regularily have 2-3 on the lot at all time. They also however have the regular CDN price tag of $20-30k.

Another source is autotrader.ca for used SVX's. I remember someone posting that only 94 1/2 ++ yr SVX's had the heated seats (some 94's in Canada have the auto belts, the ones that don't have the auto belts were labelled 94 1/2). Actually insurance rates in Ontario, for myself anyway, aren't that bad, about $1200 yr for full coverage with $2 million liability (old fart rate I guess . ).

Try ontario

Theres a bunch of SVX's for sale all the time on autotrader in ontario, relatively usual prices..I picked mine up in Guelph (hour from toronto) for 6800 after some negotiations (from 8000)...and it only had 75000 miles on it (123 000km) ... And most canada ones do have heated seats, and better body condition hers, since we all know theres much better drivers in Canada....(not trying to start something here..)
