Air Bag replacement

Hi guys!

My buddy's '92 SVX was in an accident not long ago. The guy did the smart thing and fixed up and still drives it happily The only imperfection he's got is his Air Bag -- it's missing. Is there a way he can replace it cheaply without having to go through a dealer and pay $1000+? Could he not just buy a used one or even the whole steering wheel from a different SVX? What's the deal with Air Bags? any comments appreciated. Thanks!!

Yes, he can replace one from another car that is being parted out. You need to get him to join the group.

It is really easy to replace. Disconnect battery, wait an hour or so, pull little plastic covers from side of steering wheel, use security Torx bit to remove four bolts, remove airbag from wheel, disconnect wiring connector. To be safe, treat it like it is ready to go off the whole time and keep your face and body out from in front of it.

I have an extra airbag from a 92 if you are interested.

Hey Rufus (and Earl),

Thanks for the info! I'm going to a junk-yard right now to see what's there. How much would it be for the airbag shipped to WA, 98026 ? Thanks again!

Actually, I didn't even think about the shipping. Is it even legal to ship an airbag? I'm pretty sure it is not the kind of thing anyone would want on an airplane, for example.

Anyone know?

There was some discussion about that before, and it can not be shipped. You could get one at a wreaking yard though.

There is some information in the How-To Locker for air bags.

Hi guys! I went to the wrecking yeard today and got some visors!!! YESSSS!!! Finally my car's got visors. And... the've got an SVX with quite a bunch of stuff on it including headlights, taillishts... and what not. It's a good oportunity for the NW members. The car is a pearly (watch out Dan!) with gray interior. driver seat is missing and windows switches are gone also... http://aaronsauto.com/ is the place.

-Nick

p.s. The airbag is selling for $250... For the visors I paid $35 a pice ))

Just for the record, if anyone in the Maryland area is in need of an airbag, I will sell you one for FAR less than $250

Legacy and Impreza airbags of the same vintage are the same as the SVX, I have a Legacy one on mine....which by the way I had shipped UPS ground, got it on e-bay for cheap, had to die it to match the interior, but all that cost was a $5 can of spray die.

I've never hooked up the wireing to it, being afraid that the sensor that tripped it, is still tripped, and will blow the new one as soon as I hook the battery back up, can anyone tell me a way to check it?

I like wrenches.....I hate electronics

From what I've seen (actually pulled off the OE wheel) and what has been said about the airbags being the same. You could keep your eye on ebay for any 1992-2004 Impreza/Legacy/Forester steering wheel complete with airbag. The only install issue will be the airbag wiring harness. snip the old one off your OE wheel, solder it to the new wheel & you're done.

I'm hoping to be lucky enough to pick up another OEM WRX steering wheel like I was able to for my Wife's 2002 Legacy. I was able to drive 1.25 hours, to pull it myself off of a WRX getting prepped for SCCA ClubRally as well as pulled there complete rear brakes and control arms, e-brake cables, etc. To help convert a friends '03 TS to disk brakes in the rear.

Just another option as people from time to time on NASIOC.com & eBay will sell off their OE one either from a salvaged car or because they blew money on a JDM version wheel or something.

The Legacy one I got has the correct connector, but I'm afraid that if I plug it up, it'll blow, as on some cars you have to replace the sensors and SRS Computer if it has blown...but I don't know about the SVX, maybe someone with a FSM will chime in.....as I'd like for the SRS light to go out
