My parents 96 legacy brighton had a spring break and then shred the front tire. My mom was driving and managed to not crash the thing. Amazing. They replaced both sides for free - I'm not sure what happened with the tire replacement though.

edit: they live in the rust belt of upstate NY and have about 190k on the car.

Sorry, I was referring to the rear subframe. I'm just passing on what I was told by Subaru Fixed Ops. I've no idea on the coil springs... the subframe is a different issue (and the one I'm referring to) though the problem stems from the same set of circumstances. I think quite a few people have had spring failures.. that was an ongoing thing, the subframe thing is new.
